Punting advice on laying a runner

Postby Frosty » Mon Oct 16, 2006 10:03 pm

Guys,

Just after some advice cos I'm not 100% sure how the system works when it comes to laying a runner in a race.

Can you lay any horse/dog in any race? How are the odds determined?

There is a story behind this;

On SAFM at the moment Hamish and Andy have a show and they've bought a greyhound called Fred Bassett. It ran at Sandown last Thursday Night I believe and because of the popularity of the show every man and his dog had money on it and it was a short priced favourite despite never having run before. It was in Box 1 and started OK but ended up running out of gas and coming last. As a popularity stunt they are taking the dog to Albion Park this thursday Night so the QLD fans get a look at it. No doubt every man and his dog will jump on it again and I'm thinking if it couldn't win at it's first race start from box 1 in Melbourne then it probably won't win whatever it's box draw is at it's 2nd race having to travel as well. I think laying this dog would be a good bet but I'm not sure how to go about placing the bet.

P.S. All the talk of laying animals is in no way any form of beastiality.

Cheers

Say the TAB is offering $3, & you want to lay it, you might offer $3.50
Whatever the price is, you are offering a better price, because you want to lay it (take it on).
Trouble is, I doubt you'll find too many mug punters on Betfair (all the moron money will be bet in pubs/on track)

sounds interesting Frosty - dunno if the Betfair punters will be that dumb though, worth a look but.

do you have a betfair account? (if not key this referral code in NM3KYJ3PJ and we will both get free bets!)

once you have a betfair account you can either back or lay depending on what others are prepared to offer - so basically you match other peoples bets - theres a demo on the website if unsure...feel free to ask any questions you have...cheers

Just to see if I've understood this then for the AFL 2007 GF winner Geelong are showing 14 and $3 to back and 18 and $18 to lay.

So if I take Geelong as a lay to not win the GF I'm betting $18 to $306 that they won't make it? Is that right?

Likewise, if I tip them to win the GF I'm wagering $3 to $39 for that to happen.

I hope I've understood this........... :? :? :? :? :?

its saying that you can back them at $14- (you can invest $3 at that price - thats the smaller number under the price)

same for laying - you can lay them for $18- (up to $18 at that price)

Minimum bet is $6-00 - so you dont have the lay the full $18- its just $18 is available at that price - hope this makes sense

Who wants to go for more than 2 mins- you or her?
I suggest it's her problem- explain it's a natural hunter-gatherer instinct to "hit & run", as that way the beer doesn't get warm, & you won't miss any races!

Didn't bet either way on it in the end cos I was too indecisive - oh well, it's coming to Adelaide next week.

Maybe Dangle Park will get a record crowd
