hypothetically, if you were the owner of an odds on shot, you could lay it for a big amount on betfair and take steps to ensure it does not win (as any owner would know there are more ways to lose than to ensure it will win).
how the hell can this be regulated by stewards??
what are everyone's thoughts??

no different to holding a racing animal back for a few runs, to get a better price, & then plunging it.
I think owners are entitled to lay their animals if they know they are no chance, as they are the ones who pay it's fees/keep.
Naturally, I wouldn't condone outright cheating.

BETFAIR is HERE to stay!!!!!!!!!!
racing victoria and the Vic government didnt want to allow betfair into their state because of the race fixing etc.
BETFAIR is in tassie and by all reports they are pumping heaps of money into the racing industry in Tassie by sponsoring races.
One of the issues for racing vic, was that they didnt want BETFAIR to sponsor country races as that would be easier to 'fix' races etc.
BETFAIR would be regulated by stewards by getting a report of all the bets taken etc and who put the bets on etc.
the SAJC need to be doing all they can to be getting BETFAIR into this state, to get more money pumped into the industry that is currently dying.

Excellent valid point.
Its certainly a grey area, but its buyer beware.
If i laid a $2 pop at $3 to you,and gotcha in then its buyer beware.
It alledgedly happens on racecourses.
Owners will approach a Bookie and say my horse is and cant......

On course bookies are dinosouring out thier existance by inflexiblity and inability to re-invent
themelves as a business.
100 years ago they rolled up at the races with a blackboard displaying odds, a clerk , a baggy
the boss and betting EW and WIN as options.
The only difference 100 years later is the blackboard is now a computer board and the clerk
records bets via a lap top and a ticket is computer printed and not hand written.
And they still bet EW and WIN.
An innovative Bookie would implement drastic survival proceedures to stimulate on course
patronage instead of rolling up betting on antiquated 100 year old betting meduims.
Some have incorporated sports betting, internet betting, phone betting and are adapting off course.
But the lazy on course bookie who invariably blames the clubs for not attracting crowds
will diminsh and places like Globe Derby + Angle Park will become museums.
Betfair may be the catalyst to stimulating on course activity.
MALS advice is open up a smorgasboard of betting options on course.
bet on :
quinellas
exactas
favourite not to win
running doubles
place only betting
bet 125 % per race
all up win or place bets
bet on sport on course
bet on which dog runs last
bet on which dog runs second
bet 1st /last quinella
bet on odds favourites lengths in for evens[like points at footy]
etc
etc
etc
etc
The clubs should incorporate and assist the bookie with this venture instead
of
ignoring each other.
Yes BETFAIR like PACKER may be the answer.
As for laying the dead horse, well it happened before and will happen with BETFAIR
but maybe more often ?

for example, going back to the laying of a horse, do stewards have the ability (or agenda) to trace bets against a odds on pop through betfair. if the answer is no, then there is a serious flaw in the system and an avenue for cheating.

O-L you are completely right with the legitimacy of laying horses to lose.
I believe of instances where enquries have made and actions taken.

dont get me wrong people, i am not slagging off betfair, all i am doing is raising the issue that with new techonolgies comes new ways to beat the system and cheat. the relevant authorities need to be ready for it otherwise our system will become corrupt

Im pretty sure Stewrads have access to all Betfairs records. WOuld be interesting though, say you own a horse thats going to be a favourite in even a Adelaide Sat race and you stand to win $12k in prizemoney if it wins however for some reason you know your horse is not 100% (or just not confident it will win) you could lay it for say a liabiliuty of a few grand so you have a win/win situation!!!!!

Lee freedman was fined, albeit a token fine- over the matter as he didnt tell stewards OSJ suffered a setback during the week. Race 'tampering' happens without a doubt, whenever there is money involved dodgy stuff happens. only gotta look at phar lap and the cups doubles, sabis money races in the thoroughbreds the list is endless. the introduction of betfair will only increase the occurance of these activities as it has just made making money easier. but i agree with mal, its either buyer beware or get 'in' the know.
