Bookmakers have shortened Labor's odds of winning the next federal election following Kevin Rudd's election as opposition leader.
Online betting agency Centrebet said today that more money had already been bet on Labor winning the next federal election under Mr Rudd than was placed on the opposition throughout Kim Beazley's last two years in charge.
Centrebet has today taken more than $10,000 on Labor to win next year's election, having taken less than $10,000 in bets on the party since Mr Beazley became leader for a third time in January 2005.
The bets followed Mr Rudd's victory today in a party room ballot in which he beat incumbent Kim Beazley by 49 votes to 39.
Centrebet said Labor's price had dropped from $2.75 to $2.50.
However, the odds are still stacked in favour of John Howard again being returned as prime minister at next year's election with the coalition increasing only slightly from $1.40 to $1.50 to win.
Bets on the coalition are in six figures, including one $50,000 punt, Centrebet spokesman Mark Worwood said.
``Punters think Kevin Rudd is a better election bet than Kim Beazley ever was,'' Mr Worwood added.
``However, they're still betting coalition prime minister John Howard is the best bet of all.''

Piss weak turnout at last weeks IR rally show that the so called punters dont really give a toss. For labor to win they will have to find another platform as from what I can gather everybody is over it. They should be hammering the government over the AWB scandal not squabbling amongst themselves. They have a much better chance of election without Ken Bazley (is that his name) but still wont beat Howard - the Liberals are a moral.

Or maybe the workers who would get out and join the march work in industries where, unlike government workers, they actually have to work and cant have days off willy nilly whenever they want. It'd be funny to see people who work in offices actually go out and do some real work, where they cant just sit on their ass and pretend they are working, posting on websites, having long lunches, without losing their job in 3 days because they actually have a boss.

Have the rally on a weekend and you will double the people there.

Nah! not having a go at anyone, just find it amusing that so much money is wasted every year by the government. Half the government workers could be sacked and there would be no loss of production.

Howard now has his 4th Labor opponent.
I think its time we listed the Labor party on the Stock Exchange.
As the all 'ordinaries'

At least RUDD doesent need to go on a diet.

There is no way Gillard will become leader of the opposition and Rudd knows it because she is way too ugly and no one would vote for her in an election
