SA HARNESS RACING - WHY TURNOVER IS DOWN

Postby SCD » Tue Dec 05, 2006 1:56 pm

Turning off the back straight on the first occasion, KAHUNA broke without interference, severely checking PRAESERVARE, LEICA SMALL TIME and LA TO VEGAS and as a result, LA TO VEGAS fell and driver Gary Hill was dislodged from the sulky of LEICA SMALL TIME. Subsequent to the race, Stewards withheld all clear and questioned drivers Shaun Adams (KAHUNA), Danielle Hill (BAD BOY TRUMP), Paul Cavallaro (ONYA GIRL), Angela Chapman (HANCOCK), Terry Brown (BELLARENE), Scott Ewen (TOMMY THEGUN), Robert A’Court (PIXEL), Alan Smith (PRAESERVARE) and Gary Hill (LEICA SMALL TIME) and the Clerk of the Course Mr Stephen Pearson, regarding BAD BOY TRUMP taking a run to the inside of the field after being directed around the fallen horse, LA TO VEGAS), by Mr Pearson. Subsequently, Angela Chapman lodged an objection against BAD BOY TRUMP being declared the winner alleging that it had gained an unfair advantage by going through on the inside, after being directed to go wider around the fallen horse. After taking evidence from the drivers, acting on their own observations and viewing the official video film, the Stewards disqualified BAD BOY TRUMP from the race and amended the Judge’s placings to 8, 6, 4, 1 and 5 and all clear was given on those numbers. The Stewards took further evidence from Miss Hill and Mr Pearson, then charged Miss Hill under Rule 163 (1) Part (n), with taking an unfair advantage during the race in that, after being directed by the Clerk of the Course to keep wide around the fallen horse, she took a run to the inside of the leader HANCOCK, and went on to be first past the post. The Stewards found Miss Hill guilty as charged and suspended her driver’s licence for 14 days.

This is absolutely disgraceful - A Chapman couldn't stear her horse down and D Hill did the right thing and tried to win the race - it's a joke that this happened.. the Stewards in Adelaide are part of the reason that turnover is declining.. they should be looking at themselves..

In addition - I've owned horses for the last 5 - 6 years and had a few winners along the way.. but this past 12 months I have had nothing but problems with stewards.. from them balloting one horse from a program (my horse) cause we nominated for an R1 and they had 11 noms.. so instead of putting her in the no better then R1 with only 6 runners in it - she didn't get a run to changing the conditions of races from mares only to No better then C1 and having my mare draw barrier 5 or 6 with all these Geldings (who shouldn't be in the race) drawing 7,8,9 = NO CHANCE for Owners and with the decisions made in the stewards room - no chance for Punters either..

Then they wonder why turnover is down and why people don't come to the track, if you don't look after participants, how can you get new people involved??

i've watched the replay on a few occaisions as you asked & i know what your saying but unless i'm wrong you have to 'follow the leader when going around a horse or driver" that is down on the track yes hill showed initiative but what should of happened to PROTECT PUNTERS was a no race because all of a sudden whoever back it could not win
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

This point I probably didn't make clear enough...

either A Chapman didn't go back to the fence quick enough and D Hill did the right thing or
Horses and Drivers were inconvenienced and the race is a no race - the Stewards got this one wrong badly...

I come back to the inept stewarding in SA Harness Racing at the moment, whether that be through poor decisions or thorugh terrible terrible programming and not giving owners a chance, but adding changes to programming after all noms are in and not giving anyone a chance to plan races properly...

In addition to the stewards, Mark Carey (CEO) publically said to a few people that we don't need small people in harness racing, well I'm one of those small people who will refuse to own horses in SA after my horse has finished racing and in fact I will seriously consider whether betting is really worth it once I move to Melbourne.

Most of the drivers are jokes (and not questioned.... i.e. T Brown and W Gowley on Saturday) and then to top it off when a driver tries to win a race she is disquallified and suspended for 14 days, we don't have enough good drivers as is... Either D Hill deliberatly cheated and should get 6 weeks (like G Butler) or the race is a no race and she is just reminded of her obligations, a 2 week suspension is a load of crap!

SCD

its very hard to argue against all those points you raised.

My question is that can the stewards be questioned on the decisions that they have made.

surely they understand precedence, as im sure this has happened before.

The stewards can't be questioned (well they can be - log onto harness.org.au) and find the contact the stewards and grab the e-mail address.. I will be doing it tonight asking a few questions.. i.e. why was D Hill suspended under rule Rule 163 (1) Part (n), when it should be rule 162... also asking how it wasn't a no race, given the inconvenience to horses in the race...

I can't find any precedent in this ruling.... but there is no consistancy anyway..

J Lydeamore (goes for home 1 lap from home) at a non-tab Kadina meeting 18 months ago = 12 week suspension
G Butler (Goes to the sprint lane 1 lap from home) at a tab Gawler meeting 1 month ago = 6 week suspension

The stewards have just lost it - i've got a few questions I will raise with them.. If I get a response I'll let you know I have one - but if I do get one (I doubt I will) then I will decide if I put it up depending on the outcome..
