I apologise if this has been done already, but having only joined recently, would be curious to know what some people's biggest returns for smallest investments have been (thinking of the double I referred to in the Courage Under Fire thread), as well as biggest odds winners landed.
For my biggest odds, cannot remember the name of it for the life of me, but last race at Morphettville on Melb Cup day, 1999; backed a 152/1 shot that actually didn't have too bad form in the provinicials. Remember it well for the fact that, for the first 800m or so of the race, the caller (Terry McAuliffe, one of the nicest blokes you could meet) was calling it in the lead (it had jumped straight to the front). With about 700m or so to go, he started virtually ignoring it, and calling every other horse in the race except the leader. Horses on its outside, behind it, down the back - everything but him!! With about 100m to go, he suddenly noted the leader once again, mainly because it had kicked two lengths clear and won easily. One of those quite unexpected wins obviously. Backed a 250/1 shot for a place one day, that ran third and paid $26 - another surprise!
Biggest returns for smallest investments - a $420 double at Kyneton one day, for a $1 double on both rides by Dean Yendall (a jockey I have a LOT of time for).
Only a week or so later from that, was at a pub one night by myself and strolled over to see an Angle Park race. Took a 1/2 unit First 4 with the odds on favorite to win, throwing in the $29 outsider and two others in for second and third, with the field for 4th; only 7 dog field. The outsider (I think it was called Agent Eli, from memory) duly ran second. To this day, I will never know how it paid $1600 with an odds-on fave winning. At that time, it was a huge bonus that was very much appreciated at a time when things were a bit tight.

The biggest odds I collected was at Oakbank one year when I was working as a bookies bagman, I was looking after Melbourne and the Easter Cup was coming up, we had Ideal Centreman at 25/1, the bookie next to us had him at 100/1!!
I put a dollar each way on him for a return of $125!
Biggest individual bets I made were mainly on North (a couple of wins in the 90s against Sturt) at $200 a pop and on a horse I had $200 on Veandercross to beat Naturalism which got up.
$200 has always been my unofficial limit for some reason.

I spent a bit of money to win my collect, but one night my horse won at Gawler.. had a bad day at work - so went out in a filthy mood - told everyone that a horse couldn't win over 1750m at gawler (it hadn't been done for over 2 1/2 years prior to this night) - when I got there, I just opened my wallet cause of the mood I was in and had the trifecta 10 / f / f for $1 = cost $72 (got most of the pool) when it was 10 / 1 / 7 - Kreta Boy was the horse, from Trustley and Jellico Fella (we were combined with Supertab at the time - it was 4 Jan 2002 - tri paid over $6500 (still have the ticket also and the photo on the wall of him winning by 15m)).. in addition had $100 e/w on and collected another $1,700 @ the $14 the win.. ended up collecting over $8,000 from the tab on the way home - they couldn't pay me out on track....

April 11 1998. Was at my local quite early this day with a bunch of mates having an Easter bender. Several hours before the race I got $5 off four of my mates and invested $25 the win on one of my favourite nags at the time. We drank heavily for the next few hours and next thing I knew the race had started and was half over. Squinting up at the screen they are coming down the straight and I had know idea where our horse was. Out wide screaming home I notice the Bart Cummings colours and after some drunken yelling we got the money. Catalan Opening won the Doncaster for us at $28 by a short nose!! I had no idea it was at those odds so to collect $700 for the boys was great, I was a popular boy that afternoon. Also scored a chick that night who turned out to be my wife, remember the day well for someone who was so pissed!!

Been with the same woman since, amazing what a pocket full of dollars can do. She's had a rude shock since though...

I had $10 EW on a friends horse called Rumah Batik when she won her first race in Hamilton a few years ago. She was first time in blinkers so my mate had a fair bit on it and paid $58 for win on punitab but paid more that $100 on Supertab. Was a nice collect. Also won on her when she won her first race in town at 20/1 and Hilton Donaldson thought his shit didnt stink because he tipped her.
