Back in the late 70's when Bob Robertson reigned supreme I can recall when he used to hold court in the middle of the ring with his underlings ready to attack. Same the Manuals, both big punting syndicates with astute stable connections.
Robertson had lobbed early for the first in Melbourne which was an eye opener cause he usually did'nt lob till the 2nd in the locals at the earliest. His crew circled the outer ring about 10 minutes before the race (back when they had the interstate fields on the back of the boards) & hit the fav, bringing it in from 7/4 to around the 5/4 mark. This was'nt echoed in the fluctuations from Melbourne though. I was running the prices at the time to the Derby & bolted out with the info & had to come back for last minute changes, funnily enough two of Robertsons crew were strolling through to the derby at the time.
A few minutes before the jump they took off again & hit one of the Hayes roughies at 33's, good quids as well slashing the price to 10's, & then as I headed off to the Derby they went round again bringing the price into 9/4, the earlier bets on the fav were just to bring the prices out as the fielders tried even their books. When I lobbed in the Derby Robertsons mob were just starting their attack & luckily (for my arse) I got to my bookies before they were noodled.
Can't remember the horse for the life of me, but on the turn it was how far, only for the thing to run off on the turn & finish out of the placings. The horse bolted in its next start, but at odds on. The official flucs on the day from the east were 20's - 4's
