SPORTSMEN WHO GAMBLE

PostPosted: Sun Feb 18, 2007 7:05 pm

4 AFL footballers including Simon GOODWIN have been sprung gambling.

Big deal, they are human beings like us in the Gambling room, let them bet.

When I was thier age, I rooted, gambled, got pissed all part of being an Aussie.

I have no problem if they back thier team to win.
If they back thier team to lose then that should be scrutinised.

So whats wrong with a player backing himself to kick the first goal in AFL
Or a cricketer backing himself for most runs
Or even backing his team to win a flag
Or to back himself in a medal.

As Paul Mcartney once sung LET IT BE .

EXACTLY I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH PLAYERS BETTING, IT COULD EVEN MAKE THEM TRY HARDER !!! THE ONLY PROBLEM IF PROVED WOULD BE IF THEY BACKED THE OPPOSITION THEN THEY SHOULD GET LIFE, WHO REMEMBERS PONTINGS FIRST INNINGS IN TEST CRICKET IN PERTH ? HE GOT OUT LBW 96 IN A DOUBTFUL DECISION WELL YOUNG RP HAD BACKED HIMSELF TO SCORE 100+ AT 33/1 THE BET WAS 10,000/300 BIG MONEY FOR HIM IN THOSE DAYS, BUT HE BACKED HIMSELF TO SUCCEED NOT TO FAIL & I THINK THAT SHOULD BE THE BOTTOM LINE

Allegedly, an SANFL side years ago stung a local bookie, by backing a backman to kick the first goal- they unloaded.
Imagine the surprise on the faces of many, when this backman ran down the ground to make position, while the team-mates chipped around until he recieved it & goaled!

I thought that their were some privacy rules maybe broken here, but I dare say the players contracts give the AFL the ability to obtain this information otherwise the lawyers would be all over this angle....

I wouldnt like it if i saw jockeys punting on races and find it the same for any sportsman... the rules are pretty simple to understand... surely punting on the races is enough for Goodwin... why put yourself in that position?

The Crowvertiser today suggests there may be a betting syndicate at the Crows as one bet Goodwin did was thousands of dollars.

theres nothing wrong with it, most players bet on the game just as most jockeys punt on the races they are in.

but Jockey's face the wrath of the Stewards (if caught), judt like the footballers should face the wrath of the AFL (if caught).

I am a sportsman, & I gamble- I make sure I do not bet on any games I'm involved with though

the problem is that there are stewards who are probably in on it as well as the jockeys in some cases.

well if the AFL is to bring the full force of its wrath onto players in the AFL that bet then there wont be too many left.

you always know that BAYMAN or MAL will take your bets on your sporting games!

stewards are a top bunch of blokes and would never be involved in anything corrupt.....

The syndicate story isn't too far off the mark in the Tiser at all...when names come out, it will be interesting reading. Two players, recruited from the same club - one still playing, one not - will be awaiting things with bated breath...
