I would have been there but i'm buggered if i can remember who won the race.
They were the days, 20 Bookies and BIG crowds with some DECENT Horses, Trainers and Drivers to Bet on.
Thorate?
Interesting to note that the Prizemoney is still no better today, 16 Years later. FFS wot a JOKE!

Geez, that does bring back some memories, bloody Thorate won my Dad a shitload of money.
As a kid I can remember being at Globe Derby in the 70s however my 2 fondest memories were watching Westburn Grant's two amazing runs there.

From memory 28 or 30 was Maiden class and when a horse won a 28 class race he became a 28.1,then a second win would make him a 27 and so on through the classes. Some races I think were penalty free but can't remember why (2yo,3yo,4yo ? ). Can't remember if country races were penalty free.
Long time ago, best I can do,some on here will be able to supply more detail or correct me where wrong.

yes from memory that is correct a maiden was 28 or 30 & it went down as they won races etc, of course some penalty free races existed as they do now, but what about the prizemoney ? there is NO $1,200.00 way back then it just goes to show you we have indeed gone backwards, i recall 'the fox' (ray fewings) saying on 5rph not that long ago that in the 50's if you won one race a year (they raced for 6 months of the year then) that you got enough to buy a house, also it would pay for all expenses for the year, now it doesn't even pay a months training fees

Yeah, i was there that night TTP Smashed the Track Record but unfortunately leftjust B4 that race cos was Broke, but i Vividly remember listening to on the radio on the way home. He came from the 2nd row as well. Makes one wonder about the time when SONIC Broke the record, running 1.55.10 as he was a shit horse at the time and beat shit horses as well in that race by a narrow margin. to this day i cant believe that time could be correct as no other horses had previously come close to it and since then its only been bettered during this years INTERDOMINION i think??? Blacks A Fake about 1.55.00 ??? SONIC Would never have finished within 100 metres of BAF.
The race Tip Top Prince won in Melb was the Legends i think. About 3/1 with Bookies, Led all the way in about 1.57 from memory. One of the Knight horses was about Evens Fav.
