Gold Edition a chance for Qld Guineas

June 01, 2007 RON Maund loves doing things his own way.

He is unorthodox. He often comes under fire from animal lovers and purists for continually sending his horses to the track.

So it came as no surprise when Maund yesterday sensationally revealed his Australian Racehorse of the Year nomination Gold Edition was a serious chance of running in Monday week's Group One Queensland Guineas - just 48 hours after contesting the Group One Stradbroke Handicap.

"I'm not saying she's a definite starter in the Guineas, but I'm not saying she won't run either," Maund said. "It's been in the back of our minds to back her up.

"Jockeys Jimmy Cassidy and Darren Beadman have always been of the opinion that this horse could step up to the mile.

"And if we're going to dip our toes in the water, it might as well be in a race against the three-year-olds at set weights.

"I've always said the horse looks better on the Sunday after she races, and there's no way I'm going to wrap her up in cotton wool.

"When people say I should put this horse in the paddock, she comes out and blows them away. And when they've said she can't run 1400m, she comes around the corner seven in front and wins by five lengths."

Maund said his horse had thrived following her defeat to Takeover Target last week in the Group One Doomben 10,000.

The trainer said his filly was poorly weighted in the Stradbroke with 53.5kg and Mitanni (54.5kg) looked the horse to beat.

As for the Horse of the Year gong, Maund said: "She's the kind of horse Australians love, she's tough and classy, not a powder-puff, but I'll leave the decision to the experts.

"I know she's the Horse of the Year in our eyes.

FFS... I just shake my head when i read about stuff like this...She is a great little horse and is as tough as they come but doesnt Ronnie think there is a tomorrow? What potential this filly has and he runs her into the ground week in week out. He needs to take aleave out of the mckee's book and how they treated there star filly that went on to win 2 cox plates and rates as one of australias greatest middle distance horses. This filly will have had enough of racing by this time next year (if not before) and he may have missed on having her at her peak...GREEDY. Thats why Gai, Lee and David all get the good horses because when a little bloke gets a good one they exploit them.

Unfortunately being in the UK I cant keep up with it running this often. Sorry as I said I dont let following the horses rule my life.

Pretty sure there are a few good Aussie horses running in England over the next couple of weeks. Will try and have a look if I can get there....

Next week at Royal Ascot supposedly Takeover Target, Bentley Biscuit, Magnus & Miss Andretti all running in two feature races. TT won the Kings Stand Stakes here last year and is nominated again. I know Elvestroem ran 3rd in one of the two races in 2005. So will be good for Aussie racing if we get a good showing.

Think elvis ran in a race with a bit longer trip MDM, but he did do quite well along with Starcraft who won a group 1 beating the highly rated Dubawi at newmarket in 2005. Also won a group 1 in france if i remember correctly...
TT will be hard to beat again, but maybe he will be looking to the Jubilee stakes this year - Miss Andretti will be the one over the shorter trip of the king stand IMO... great racing over there at the moment... bet frankie was happy finally winning the epsom derby...on yet another brillant montjeu colt.

I am just looking through the markets and Miss Andretti is about 4.5/1 at the moment.
