well last night i walked into the ring & this was the market from p.dammarrell i saw on race 4 (to be fair i dont know if any had shortened or lengthened but this is what i saw when i went into the betting ring)

1. 7/2 (4.60)
2. 8/1 (9.00)
3. 6/1 (7.00)
4. 13/1 (14.00)
5. scr
6. scr
7. 6/1 (7.00)
8. 10/1 (11.00)
9. 1/2 (1.50)
10. 9/1 (10.00

that was his win only market his e/w market was a lot worse than that, this is why (one reason) people dont bother going as they bet on the tote the majority of time anyway although later in the night dammarrell was asleep he opened up spinning wagon at 4.20 thankyou very much & at that stage it was 1.90 on the tote, bayman says thankyou to pd

Dont underestimate PD he is a shrewd bookie and a survivor.
If he puts up 115 % like the tote the punters would make mince meat out of him.
PD with the % he puts up will lay about 2-3 runners per race
He dictates which ones he will lay the rest he will crib below the TAB.
He has a very astute market assessor in his corner doing his markets.
That means he will scrounge up his pocket money and fight another battle.
I cant beat him with the %, but by making his markets professional proof
neither can the other smarties.
Occasionally the shrewies like BAYMAN/JB/AB/JJ/JS will get him, but not often enough.

OTHER REASONS over the last 20 years that there has been a decline are....
1/ Pokies
2/ Tabs in Hotels, Clubs etc.
3/ Tab Phone Betting, Internet betting from the Comfort of Home.
4/ Pay TV - Sky Channel in your Lounge
5/ Lack of ON-COURSE Patrons

Plus many other reasons but Oakbank is the perfect example of Bookies will Field on meetings if the crowds are there.
Victor Harbor Trots Last year Had about 7-8 bookies there to there 1st meeting Because there was a Big crowd there which gave the Bookies a chance to run a decent Book.

Not to mention there is TAB on-course at most meets.

Internet betting is the best thing since sliced bread.

I have never betted with a bookie ever not even when im on track. :)

Gee Bayman, Cant remember the last time i saw a bookie have better than the tote.
Exception is TabSportsbet which offers Fixed odds like a bookie and Regularly opens the Favourites way over the odds than what they start at on the tote. eg. Smoken Up at MV last Friday Night. They bet $2.90 and started $1.90 on the tote.

One of the factors was way back when DeciMAL currency was introduced.[1966?]
Punters who used to bet 5-10-20-50-100 pounds then bet $5-10-20-50=100 dollars.
Almost immediately the investment turnover was recindered.
The next predatory factor was the introduction of the TAB

The HUGE Advantage that the TAB had over the Bookies that have forced them out of buissness was that the TAB had the SOLE RIGHT to accept bets off course. Before then, Punters HAD TO GO ON COURSE to bet and had to be with the bookies. Nowadays, its never been easier to get a bet on OFF course, Hence punters bet 99% of the time with the TAB. Put it this way,The TAB have access to 100% of the punters where as the Bookies only have access to the tiny on course crowds plus a few account customers which are offered TAB odds anyway or a fixed price that is generally unders anyway.

From yesterday's Herald Sun...

Vic bookies struggling
Adrian Dunn

June 04, 2007 12:00am

VICTORIA, reeling from the departure of Global Sports and Alan Eskander, has suffered another blow with Winbet pulling the plug on its internet operation.

Winbet, among the top three bookmakers in the state, will continue to field at Victorian race meetings.

But Winbet shareholder Greg Engellener said antiquated legislation made the continuation of its internet operation financially unviable.

Winbet's decision raises questions on the future of Victorian bookmakers offering an internet service.

Four of seven Victorian bookies who had an internet service, jointly funded by Racing Victoria Limited and the Victorian Bookmakers' Association, have scrapped it. RVL and the VBA are expected to review their involvement.

In the past month, Global Sports has moved its operation to Canberra, while Eskander and his Betstar operation now work out of Darwin.

Both are huge players in the burgeoning Australian betting market and Victorian racing will be $1.5 million poorer for their departure.

Engellener said Winbet could not compete with interstate betting shops that offered a 24-hour service.

He said, because of the legislation, Winbet was forced to send staff members to country gallops/trots/dogs meetings simply so it could turn on its internet service.

"And as soon as the last race is run, we have to turn it off, even if there is more interstate races to bet on," Engellener said.

"We are living in the Dark Ages in Victoria. How can we attract clients and compete with bookies from Darwin? They have a superior product and they operate 24/7 and that's what punters want, a one-stop shop."

Engellener said he had met Racing Minister Rob Hulls' advisers, but there was no time frame set to correct the anomaly.

He said Winbet was closely monitoring the success of Eskander's move and would not rule out that Winbet could follow Eskander's lead.

"It's like having two milk bars, one on each corner of a street. One is open 24/7 and the other is open three days a week between noon and 5pm and they are both selling same product at the same price," Engellener said.

"It's crazy. You can't point the finger at the VBA or RVL, they are both supportive. It requires a legislation change.

"We don't know how long that change will take. It could be two years away. We can't burn money for that long. In the end it was a simple business decision."

Yeah not to mention if you shop around online books you can get better odds than the bookies on-course AND TAB 20-50 cents more sometimes.
