Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Postby leftlegger » Tue Apr 24, 2007 7:19 pm

Oh ...and..my granny tells me that Big Bill Wedding, Dougie Olds, some bloke called Schulz who used to kick goals and some other bloke that they called Bucket Head (because he ran head first into the grandstand) were also good.

Turbill

Woodcock - only cause I saw him at the very end of his career. (the best HFF in SANFL history?)

No mention of Danny Jenkins by anyone ?
Him and the 2 Thomas lads in the early 80's were guns.

Big call. If the great Ralph Sewer had played in a top team all his career....

McAlmanac - I could've been biased and compared him to Flash graham but I think Woodcocks stats speak alone really ?

Flash Graham was a more complete player.

Given this was a NOrwood thread, I didn't want to blaspheme.

Roger's stats do way up quite well as a Half forward flanker in regards to goals kicked.
I'm not sure how many Flash kicked in his career.

Can spelly do a head to head on Roger Woodcock vs Flash graham vs Zip Zap ?

Thanks

Smithy , good point . Keith Thomas is a player i rate highly . His mark in the 84 grand final when running back with the flight of the ball on the members wing and coming out the other side of the pack and hitting Aish on the chest made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up . So courages in the context of that fiery contest .

I remember Craig Balme giving Tim Evans a nice welcome to Full Forward during the national anthem aswell .
What i dont know about football isnt worth knowing .

I went to Moorabbin in 1975 to watch the round 21 clash between
St.Kilda & Collingwood and this was my first view of Fabulous Phil.
The winer of this game was assured of playing in the finals and it turned
out to be one of the best games I have ever seen.
My favorite STK player, George Young, got 8 and while that was great, Carman was something else.
I think, wearing his white boots for first time, he kicked 11 goals, beat two good defenders, Breen and Lawrence and possibly others, taking brilliant contested mark after mark, single handedly ripping the Saints apart and putting the Pies in the finals.
Best players I've seen until Gary Ablett.

Talked to my old man today and he said Wedding, Kneebone and then daylight and when we went through the best dozen footballers in SA of all time he couldn't find a place for any Norwood players in them, Ive always found it interesting that such a great club with a great record hasn't had the champions that other clubs have had.

If Adelaide Hawk were here he could do a year by year thing, but I can only give totals:
Roger Woodcock: 267 games 602 goals
Michael Graham: 282 games 455 goals
Ralph Sewer: 382 games 471 goals

How many Norwood players made the SANFL Team of the Century?
Come to think of it, did the SANFL have a Team of the Century? :-k

Just on the Woodcock v Graham v Zip Zap thing, my old man (Norwood supporter since he was born) doesn't even rate Woodcock close to the other 2, reckons he never got a hard ball and didn't rate him as a player at all.

Stats are prob not the best indicator there as "Flash" would have spent much of that time playing on the ball I would have thought, whereas "Splinter Dick" was pretty much a Full-time flanker.

In 1982 Rocky Roberts played much of the season on the Half Forward flank ... Broke some Australian record by kicking 10 and then 11 in consecutive weeks.

Didn't see enough of his earlier footy to know whether he played at HFF regularly though.

Not a team of the century but this a "Best SA Team since the war" as chosen in August 1994 by Fos Williams, Bob Hank, Jim Deane, Bo Morton, John Halbert and Merv Agars. All five picked their 21 and then the final team was made up from that.
Achievements in the VFL/AFL were obviously taken into consideration.

F - Rick Davies (St); Malcolm Blight(W); Bob Quinn (PA)
HF- Lindsay Head (WT); Stephen Kernahan (G); Bob Hank (WT)
C - Ken Eustice(WA,CD,G); Russell Ebert (PA); John Cahill (PA)
HB- Don Taylor (WA,G); Len Fitzgerald (St); Geof Motley(PA)
B - Brenton Adcock (St); Ian McKay (NA); Neil Kerley (WA,SA,G)
R - Peter Darley (SA); Barrie Robran (NA); John Platten (CD)
(I - Shaun Rehn (WA); Jim Deane (SA); Paul Bagshaw (St))
Coach - Fos Williams (WA,PA.SA)

If the team was purely on SANFL achievements you have to think that Rehn, Blight, Platten and Kernahan's spots would be under the microscope.

Blight and Platten won Magery medals and Kernahan lead the count in '83 but missed out due to suspension - can't do much more in the SANFL than that. Rehn is a different story tho - wonderful player all the same.

Even this biased poster would admit to Blight's position being under the microscope based purely on SANFL achievements.

Full forward candidates would include Colin Churchett, Fred Phillis, Mike Doszna and Tim Evans. Unfortunately, it is a post-war team otherwise Ken Farmer would be a shoo in.

Centre half forward candidates would include, er, Stephen Kernahan. And David Granger!

Roving candidates would include Jeff Potter, Ray Huppatz and Robert Oatey.

So there you go. Woodcock was a soft, one-sided, hungry hungry hippo who couldn't be trusted to face the Vics.
