Reckon this was the game Rob Barton broke his leg in, and was finished for the year (actually maybe for good, can't remember whether he played league again for Norwood). Elbows Cornes was in his usual fine form that day.

This has to be one of the biggest misnomers in SANFL folklore ... that Norwood were 'robbed' in the match.

Norwood were NEVER, repeat NEVER going to win this match, regardless of the wind change.

You conveniently forgot to mention that it absolutely pissed down most of the match, greatly negating the 'advantage' of the wind.

Hughes, Hartfield and Noble, faark no wonder we couldn't get near ya's!!

Thankfully Rocky, Neagle and Schmally came in for the following season!!

On a separate note, being a young kid at the time I never rated Copping as a footballer .. It wasn't til he returned from his VFL stint that I realised how good he was. In the mid-80's when most of the talk outside of the Bay revolved around McGuiness, McDermott, Kernahan, Hall, Marshall etc, bloody Copping would always bob up and make you wonder HTF you could stop all of them!?!?!

How is Gary Menzel these days??? I thought it was he who broke his leg in that game or did he fall down on accident when Cornesy was in the vicinity....

I was down on holidays from the NT and watched the highlights of this game at my grandparents. Suffice to say my grandfather (a Port supporter) didn't like Cornesy and was yelling at the TV in in the same way he used to yell at Don Dunstan when he came on the screen.

The next weekend I watched the game at Adelaide Oval against Sturt in which we managed to turn a 9 goal lead at the 3 min mark of the last qtr into a three point loss....

Could well have been Alby actually, might have just been the Cornes elbow to Bartons head .. He was always well known for his courage

Yep, his first game was against West in Round 9, 1982 after he was cleared during the week.

We kicked 32 goals that day, I can't remember how many he kicked but I assume a few, but to be honest, I could have kicked a few that day too.

This is the first game I remember being at, I was 6 years old.
I can recall where we stood, even some of the things my Dad & uncle & Grandfather yelled out that day.
Funny how stuff like that sticks with you forever yet there have been some second halves this season I'm clueless about after standing on the hill all day...

I was an avid Collingwood fan as a kid and my old man had taken me over to Melb for the GF. I didn't want to go because it meant I would miss the SANFL Prelim. All day we followed the radio trying to get a score/update/result but Melb radio wouldn't help whatsoever. Finally fairly late at night they gave the final scores and I was gutted. My old man was actually pretty happy if only for the fact we hadn't given up the VFL tickets to watch the Legs get smacked.
