What a joke that 'player retention scheme' turned out to be !!!
FFS... Rudi Mandemaker was part of it & he was a VICTORIAN !!!

Yes, without doubt.
The politics of the time were anti-VFL take over.
The Brisbane Bears & West Coast Eagles were in their infancy.
The competition was STILL called the VFL.
Players were being 'poached' worse than ever... Motley, Bradley Kernahan, Platten, Campbell, Taylor, Leslie, the list goes on.
The SANFL designed the system to keep players like the 2 Jarmans, McDermott, McIntosh etc. here in SA & protect OUR competiton. There was alot of parocialism around then.

(We were SHITE then, Woodville made the finals in '86 & '87)

Fair enough, LEH. Personally, I reckon any player good enough to be a top line SANFL player in that era was someone worth hanging on to.

How many of the 'retained' players actually ended up playing for the Crows or any AFL team? I heard that part of the reason for the scheme was to retain a playing list for a future AFL side.
The best players still took the bigger $$$ and went over regardless, i don't think the scheme worked out as was hoped.
