Before joining Norwood in 1988, Mark Buckley had already played senior football for three AFL clubs. Having come through Carlton's Under 19's and Reserves, Buckley made his VFL debut in 1982. He went on to play 27 games for the Blues between 1982-85, and was a member of the 1983 night premiership. His father Brian and brother Stephen also played league football for Carlton.

Struggling to hold his spot in the powerful Carlton side of the time, Buckley then moved to St. Kilda in the middle of 1985. After a couple of seasons and seven games, he transferred to the Brisbane Bears for the 1987 season. He played four games in the club's first year in the VFL competition.

In 1988 Buckley transferred to Norwood, and made his senior debut in Round 17.

Tall and lightly framed, the gifted left-footer was a dangerous forward, capable of taking a big mark and with the potential to score goals.

Somewhat surprisingly, Buckley only managed to play eight league games in his two seasons at the Parade.

Didn't show a heap .. Wasn't quick, didn't look capable of taking a high mark, had a reliable chest mark. Didn't mind getting the dukes out which was a bit of a plus, but I think that game you watched was his best performance for the club and quite comfortably from memory.
