Prior to 1968 were all the night series matches at Norwood Oval?????

Did Woodville & CD compete in the 1962 NS?

Not all games were played at Norwood.

For example in 1962 the Glenelg vs Woodville game (yes, Wv and CD were in it then) was played at Thebarton. Glenelg won 13.23 to 2.3.

36 scoring shots to 5!

By the way, JamesH, you should get a copy of Phil Herden's "2006 SA Football Media Guide". A lot of the details of these preseason/night comps are in there. I believe they are still available from "At The Toss Of A Coin" on Unley Rd.

Does anyone have more info on the Night Series (years played, results, etc) as I can find nothing on the internet about it.

I have the 1990 Hayman book and it only gives 1976-89 and includes the NFL series and the AFC series.

What years was there an exclusively-SANFL competition?

I am thinking some SANFL clubs played in both the Escort Cup and the AFC series in the same season as well as the regular season - is that correct?

Not sure if it was the same but I remember watching Centrals play against the Eagles in a Night Final of some sort in the 90's

Poured the entire time, some of the heaviest rain I remember seeing.

I believe the Eagles had a comfortably victory albeit they only kicked 4 goals. I was only young at the time but recall it being Centrals first ever Grand Final of any sort.....which is why me and the old man went down.

'Twas the 1994 Foundation Cup final. Eagles won 4 goals to 2. Extraordinarily windy night but I don't believe it rained.

I was only young but im sure it was some of the worst rain i'd ever seen. I just remember the crowd (not many) all bundled into the highest point of the members grandstand as i think that was the only section open for some reason.

Could be completely wrong I was only 10 at the time haha

Sometime later that year I remember being at Centrals/Eagles at Footy Park on a Sunday that was pretty wet from memory and unfortunately kept the crowd down

I think you're probably conflating memories. Crowd was distributed all round the ground and there was little if any rain during the game.

Was the Escort Cup in the early to mid 1980s played in the pre-season or were they midweek during the season?

I have heard that in either 1983 or 1984 some matches were played in country centres such as Berri, Moonta, Murray Bridge and Port Lincoln, and the others were double-headers at Football Park on Friday nights once the lights were installed in 1984 (that would lead it to being a pre-season comp).

I think the latter stages generally occurred a few weeks into the season. But the format varied. @spell_check would have some idea.

The final in 1983 was definitely some weeks into the season, I think in May.

Torrens won the final on a Tuesday then backed up away to a strong Norwood side four days later and played reasonably well, albeit losing.

It was a mid week cup early in the 80s (one final was played in shocking conditions at Thebby Oval) and turned to pre season around the mid 80s and changed it's name to the Foundation Cup when the govt started sponsoring tournies who previously had tobacco sponsorship. Started early Feb, used to be double headers Fri and Sat night at Footy Pk probably with one game in the country and most was on TV.
Went through till the early 90s I think.
Usually about 4 weeks round robin with a final of the top 2.
Quarters were a tad shorter and I'll never forget the game Glenelg came back and beat Sturt I think it was despite being down by 59 points at 3/4 time.
Kicked something like 10.0 to 0.0 with a goal after the siren.
Geez, that's about 40 years ago now.

Was in 1986 - 3qt score was Sturt 11.9 Glenelg 2.4
Glenelg kicked 10.3 to 0.3 in the last qtr, Jim West winning it with a mark in the dying seconds & goal after the siren.
IIRC West played Woodville in the earlier game which was also decided with a goal after the siren.

Recall Monday night footy a bit from memory which I reckon was early 80's when SA/Vic/WA all had sides in, one year there was 30 odd in the comp.
