Club Songs

I have a few questions about club songs...

Centrals = Hawthorn
Glenelg = Richmond
North = original
Norwood = Melbourne
Port = Sydney
South = Carlton
Sturt = Melbourne
West = Hawthorn
WWT = original

Who had the song first? Does anyone know?

Did Sturt not have the song first, then changed to the Carlton one, then back again? (i.e. Norwood had a different song and then changed and had the same as Sturt) or was Melbourne first to have that song?

Have any of the clubs had songs different to what they have now?

Does anyone have an MP3 of the Sturt (Carlton), West Torrens or Woodville songs I could grab?

Swans had it before Port.

Pretty sure Fos Williams appropriated it after hearing South players sing it.

Of course, they both rip-off the "Notre Dame Victory March."

Port sung a "War Cry" before that...

Thought South may have only recently had in the Carlton tune, maybe in the last ten years?
Woodville had the Yankee-Doodle-Dandy tune too.

This old Torrens one may have been posted here before. Same tune, but sounds like more of a warcry.

A Tiger for Me >>>>>>>> Tigerland.

South Melbourne actually got Notre Dame's permission to use the song.

In about 1974 or 1975 Port played South Melbourne in a trial match and it was there that the song on South Melbourne's suggestion became Ports anthem. I personally think that the Port/Sydney song and Tigerland are the best, but it is personal taste.

I have never liked North's song but a lot of people love it. It was specifically written for the club by Johnny Mac circa 1968. Johnny Mac was a great friend of Don Lindner.

North Ballarat in the VFL now use North's song, but of course use "good old black and whites" instead of "good old red and whites".

I can't prove it but I am inclined to think that Sturt used the Grand Old Flag before Norwood. I am led to believe that Len Fitzgerald introduced the song to Sturt and a Norwood supporter told me that ALan Killagrew brought it to Norwood but I am certainly not definite on those facts.

Don Roach brought the Yankee Doodle Dandy song to Westies after he returned from Hawthorn.

The WA state team sing the same song as Sydney/Port.

Bob Keddie brought the club song to West Adelaide from Hawthorn and West just changed the words. Centrals got hold of it way after West Adelaide. Personally I would rather see Centrals use This Time for their club song.

Dogs picked it up from 2000 onwards, IIRC.

I think you are correct. I have the CD at home with them all on it and their years. I can remember being at the after party in 2000 and the crowd were singing this time it was better than the players singing We're a winning team

Prefer the Doggies club song John Swan belted out.

Beware the Dogs are coming!

Rock anthem...

Agreed!

This time was penned by Lairdy, from memory. Based on an English world cup tune or something. Horrible song to actually sing when winning a game.

"This Time" was funereal.

Also loved the white guernsey and white socks.

Bring it back!

I think the 1976 Grand Final was the last time Port used the old song, as the song's lyrics were printed in the back of the Budget. I also recall hearing "Cheer Cheer the black and the white.." in 1977.
Also I was under the impression that Killegrew brought "Grand Old Flag" to Norwood and attempted to get them known as the Demons as well as changing the jumper to the Melbourne red V.

Don Roach definitely brought the Hawthorn song back to West. He sang it on Channel Seven in 1966.

Off the top of my head, the chorus of the PAFC "War Cry" went something like...

Black and white we'll stick to you
Cane them up just as you do
Buck in the Magpie that's our cry
They're sure to fall to you

When Killa was at Norwood we WERE known as The Demons. After he left we went back to Redlegs and the non Melbourne jumper.
Not sure about the song.
By their nature football songs are rarely original and when they are they are usally crap ..... Fremantle ?????

Thanks for that I was told it was Keddie.
