THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB mourns the passing of 1962 Best and Fairest and six-time premiership player Peter Obst.

Part of a proud Port Adelaide family, 'Picket Pete' was a champion half-forward for the club and played alongside his late brother Trevor in the black and white.

His six flags won in the Port jumper came amid the golden era of the club under the watchful eye of master coach Fos Williams.

A big-marking player, it was his stellar form early in 1962 that saw him shoot to the height of popularity at Alberton and in Adelaide. He won Port's best and fairest medal that year, and was runner-up in the Magarey Medal count.

He left Port in 1964 and was appointed the captain-coach of Woodville for the next three seasons.

A life member of the Port Adelaide Football Club, he also represented South Australia in four state games.

His son, Andrew, was a premiership player with Port Adelaide and had a successful 149-game AFL career at Melbourne. His grand-nephew is current Port player Brad Ebert.

Port Adelaide expresses its sincere condolences to Barbara, Dianne, Michael and Carolyn, Karen, Andrew and Juliet, Greg and Kristina, Jarrad and Krystal, Nathan and Jacqui, Chenee and Michael, Elizabeth, James, Olivia'Jae, Jed, Mitchell, Bailey and Cooper, Taylee, Nathaniel, Aria, Jade, Suvannah and Maxwell.

Yes, RIP Peter Obst. One of the great SA footy families.
