They wouldn't have known each other like they do today via things such as 'training academies' and draft camps that the good players get involved with from very early these days. Also, the fact that families have more than one car these days and can travel more plus the use of modern communications (such as social networking) means that players would now be very attuned to each other, their personalities and developing friendships outside of their clubs.

If you went to school in Glenelg area, you played for Glenelg, thus from Samboy Cup days you would be playing against the Port boys who grew up in the Port, or the North boys who grew up around North, there was no such thing as two lads who grew up in the same street and went to school together ending up at different clubs, it just didn't happen.

On top of that the Bay boys would have spent their Saturday nights at Lennys, Norwood at the Norwood hotel (I think it was) etc

Like others have said it was much more tribal back then especially when you had your own sacred dung heap

I caught up with all the North boys at Lennies one night, was a top night.

I've just listened to all 4 parts. Very strong stuff. Extraordinary insight in to Scott's life and how from the outside we as the general public think these sports stars have it all yet they may just be bottling things up as they don't want the attention.

Cant wait to read the book.

Cheers for putting them up Boon

Very good point Carey. Most of these players are very young too when this attention is thrust on them.

I was at the first game, as a Hawks supporter...

Through thick and thin you say? Guess it was pretty easy to jump off the Hawks in the mid to late 90's ;)

Available at all good book stores. Not sure why it won't sell.

Great to see Hodges interviewed this morning about the book on the ABC Breakfast program. Some interesting insights, but I'm not sure if its available online or not.

On a lighter note, during the interview they played some old highlights of Hodges and the Adelaide Crows in the early days. They also played what looked like footage of a hall of fame or similar-type of event, with Andrew Jarman speaking at the podium. I'm not sure what Jars has to do with Scott Hodges, although I can only presume that the person who complied the footage in the Melbourne ABC studios must've mistaken a post football Andrew Jarman as Scott Hodges, given both are now bald and a bit chubby in middle age.

Yep, imagine if they were on $400k a week as a 23 year old.

Then why play for them? Money?

He said in one of the radio interviews that there was strong appeal for him in staying in Adelaide. He was close with his family and obviously his Port mates.

If he didn’t fully cope with the Crows he probably would have completely fallen over playing for Collingwood or Carlton, being so isolated from his support network.

He also said he wanted to test himself at the next level and the Crows offered him a chance to do this while not having to leave Adelaide.
In between signatures .....

It took me 3 1/2 hours to read this book a couple of months ago.

A lot of his personal issues and struggles resonate with me, and was a major reason the book was so easy to digest.

TV preachers sell salvation for a buck.
