Finals comebacks.

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Finals comebacks.

Postby Magellan » Tue Sep 18, 2018 9:39 am

Now that the dust (or bulldust, if you're an Eagles fan) has settled on Sunday's result, do any of our history or stats boffins know where North's 47 point comeback ranks in terms of all-time SANFL finals comebacks?

I think Port came from 30-odds points back in the 1982 prelim, but of course were just pipped by the Bays, and I reckon North came back from 20-odd midway-ish in the last in the 1971 second semi final to win.

In terms of grand finals, of course there's Norwood's 29 point comeback in 1978, Sturt's similar comeback to just miss out in 1965, and I think I've read somewhere that Port were about 5 goals down in the second quarter in 1957 and turned it around to win.

North had a 5 goal lead on Glenelg in the 1985 Grand Final during the second quarter.

Was there a GF, maybe in the 20's or 50's between Port and Norwood where a team was down 9 goals to 3 and ended up winning?

Also remember reading about a WA, think it was a semi, with East Freo in it in the late 50's, and one team was ten goals up at 3/4 time and got run over, but wind could have been a factor.

I seem to recall that North defeated the Eagles in both the QF and the PF in 2007 after the Eagles gave away leads of about five goals or so? I think a similar thing may have happened in the 1SF in 2013? Could be wrong.

Torrens were comfortably up on West in the 1969 1SF but West came back to draw.

Reckon there might've been a 5 goals margin in the 2007 prelim, not so sure about the qualifying. There was a deficit North made up in 2013, but from memory I don't recall it being as much as 5 goals.

What was the margin in that 1969 semi-final?

North also came home with a flurry in the 06 prelim, just falling short, though that one was wind-assisted.

Woodville were 36 points down a quarter time in the 1986 1st semi and won by 7 points.

94 GF.
Port were 6 goals down at half time to the Eagles. IIRC
Enter Scott Hodges.
Port win.

22 points at half time became 28 when they kicked the first of the third quarter.

11 goals to 1 after that.

These are the largest leads given up in the premiership deciders, that I know of:

Leader Winner Year Time
41 Port Norwood 1904 Late 3rd quarter
35 Port Torrens 1945 Early 2nd quarter
35 Eagles Port 1994 28 min 1st quarter
34 Sturt Norwood 1978 32 min 1st quarter
29 North Glenelg 1985 11 min 2nd quarter
28 Sturt Port 1936 Half time
25 West Port 1954 Half time
21 North Glenelg 1973 Quarter time
21 Glenelg Port 1992 5 min 2nd quarter

In an era of low scoring the NW effort against PA in the 1904 Grand Final was special
NW 1-2..2-4....3-5....9-8
PA 4-2..5-6....8-10..8-10

Who can forget Norwoods half forward Tom Gibbons
In 72 games he kicked 36 goals for Norwood
Tom Gibbons , from an acute angle kicked the winning goal for Norwood with about a minute to go

That 41 point Port Adelaide lead was in the 3rd quarter
NW 2-5
PA 8-10

The previous time the 2 sides met that season was at Norwood Oval
NW 1-0...1-6...2-6...5-12
PA 4-4...4-4...7-4.....7-6

Similar game to the 1904 Grand Final

Did I stand with you at that 1904 Grand Final, Mal? It was at the Jubilee Oval. Was it the only Grand Final ever played there?

I cant pick the most memorable time at Jubilee Oval
The resounding NW G/F win over PA in 1904 or the hellbent daze of Ostrich races in the 1920s
