Season 1970 pt3

Following the end of the minor round, the count for the 1970 Magarey Medal was held. Pre count favourite Barrie Robran had just won his third successive car in Channel 7’s Footballer of the Year. The count has held at the Adelaide Town Hall. Unlike current counts which are read out round by round, game by game, the Third preference votes were read first then Second preference and finally the First preference vote. One always had the feeling that the votes were read out in a certain order to add excitement to the count as with the previous year with Fred Phillis winning on the last vote of the night. Hot tips for the night were Barrie Robran, South Adelaide captain Lindsay Backman & Port Adelaide’s John Cahill. Early counting indicated it was going to be a tight count and by the end of counting for the 2nd & 3rd preference voting the leader board was as follows

Barrie Robran – 9
Dennis Errey - 9
Peter Yeo – 8
Rex Voight – 8
Michael Nunan – 7
Peter Woite – 5
Robert Day – 5

Voting for the all-important 1st preference vote began and the count took on a very different look. Lindsay Backman made a charge in the middle of the 1st preference votes to move from 4 to 13 votes. Norwood coach Robert Oatey also scored 3 best on ground to take his total to 11 votes for the night but the real battle was between Barrie Robran & John Cahill. Both players began trading Best on Ground votes and after the 37th 1st preference vote was read out both players were on 15 votes. By the 62nd 1st preference vote they were tied gain on 18 votes. The concern for John Cahill was that his Port Adelaide team mates, Peter Woite, Russell Ebert & Dennis Errey were also polling well and that he had missed 5 games with injury as well. Cahill did not score another vote for the night while Barrie picked up two more best on grounds to take his total to 24 votes which was the highest tally since Lindsay Head (1963) & Geof Motley (1964) who both won with 26 votes. It was also the biggest winning margin since Jim Deane won the medal in 1953 by 6 votes.

Final Votes

Barrie Robran 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3 – 24
John Cahill 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3 – 18

Michael Nunan 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 – 16
Peter Woite 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3 – 14
Lindsay Backman 1, 1, 2, 3, 3, 3 – 13
Russell Ebert 1, 2, 3, 3, 3 – 12
Dennis Errey 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3 – 12
Rex Voigt 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3 – 11
Robert Oatey 2, 3, 3, 3 - 11
Peter Yeo 2, 2, 2, 2, 3 - 11

1970 was also the first time that the award also carried a material prize with Barrie receiving $1,200 of home furnishings. Doug Thomas in his weekly Sunday Mail article the following week wrote.

It’s reported that Peter Bedford winner of the Brownlow Medal in Victoria had within a few hours of the award signed contracts worth $10,000 with advertisers.
How about someone in the league looking into this aspect of it in SA?
It’s a bit anomalous that some league stars can collect a lot more than the Magarey Medallist from competitions conducted by the Press, Television & Radio.
Even back then Doug Thomas was onto something.

RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.
