Grenville is a fantastic bloke , in fact a SANFL legend
The last time I talked to him was at his unit
You may not believe this
Grenville was watching an AFL game that involved his former club RI and was drinking a beer ....

I never made it to the Panthers Disco
What years was the disco open ?

I remember Brenton Roberts, blonde haired singer , did the live venues around Adelaide night clubs

his at was know as "BRENTON ROBERTS AT BREAKING POINT"
panthers was known as SOUTHS DANCE CLUB at one stage

WT...0-2...4-3...11-9....20-12
GL...6-3...13-6..17-6....19-7

GL were 57 points up at half time and lost by 11 points
GL led by close to 12 goals in the 3rd quarter and still 33 points up at 3/4 time
This surely is one of the greatest comebacks in SANFL reserves football

WT BEST + LEADING GOALSCORERS
Sommerville , Meade, Wormald , Geyer , Berggren , Harper
5 Harper
4 Sommerville
4 Niemann
4 Hill

GL BEST + LEADING GOALSCORERS
Liptak , Bromilow, Maynard , Mcintosh , Battisson
3 Ellis
3 Rouvray
3 Liptak

Spare a thought for Matthew Liptak
Matthew Liptak played for GL when they lost to PA in the SANFL league GF following week

PA beat NA in the Prelim Final in the main game
Did anyone see this game or perhaps the latter part of this reserves game ?

blew the 2nd semi in similar fashion, happened two weeks in a row ffs

I think that the footage that is available from 1977 I think Russell's speech got a little muffled at about that time in his speech a bit of a clean up by the audio guys for the following day and news reports that night.

Will have to go back and check the footage of that one. The DVD's have probably been cleaned up since then.

1984
UNDER 17 GRAND FINAL
NA...1-3...3-4.. .8-11...11-15
NW 5-4..10-9...11-12..11-15

Another final where a side has made up a BIG deficit
NA were 47 points down at half time at this match I ventured down to see at Woodville Oval
The only player I knew was the one I went out to watch , a NA junior, and ahem I err barracked for NA that day ahem.
The replayed Grand Final was won by NW
NW were undefeated this season, the draw the closest to losing, imagine if they lost

Some talent evolved from this GF

NA
Jarman, Beadbury, Smart, Webster, Tonkin, Pill
5 Smart
3 Jarman
2 Pill

NW
Cant find a complete list of best players
3 Sampson
2 Molloy

Ive traced this game back with people who watched this match and a bit of research
NA
Had players who played AFL , the amazing Darren Jarman and the brilliant Gilbert Mcadam
Doug Smart who could be mercurial in the air when playing league footy kicked 5 goals, an excellent contribution for a then 15 year old
Doug Smart played league for NA and later NW
Sean Carlin who became a famous Olympian

NW
Jerry D'antochia a terriifc footballer , a very popular player at the NFC
Tim McNeil a very talented footballer who didnt play enough footy due to injury
Mark Ducker an excellent forward who once kicked 14 goals in a league match
Mark Ducker had a charmed run, this U17 flag, followed by U19 flag in 1985, followed by a Reserves flag in 1986

The other player in the NW line up was forward Robert Molloy, brother Of Glenn and son of the sensational Graham Molloy
Robert kicked 2 goals in this final and kicked a ton this season
Robert didnt play league football at the parade, question is, in what direction did his football career take?

That 1968 match was the day that the game should have ended in a draw but the field umpire and goal umpire had a misunderstanding after the siren and Sturt were awarded a point that should not have stood.

Could have been anything this lad - Lightning quick, good hands, deadeye dick near goal. Tough time that era losing players like him, Richard Anderson, James Weeding, Wayne Tanner and Matthew Kelly to different degrees of injury. All had star qualities about them.

No that was 5 weeks later at Glenelg.
In the Unley Oval incident the Field Umpire paid a free to Port just as a Sturt player picked up the ball and snapped a point. The siren rang and the umpire signalled the end of the game with the scores tied.
The goal umpire chased the field umpire, caught him and asked is that all clear. The field umpire thought he was referring to the final siren. The goal umpire then ran back and signalled a behind, sometime after the final siren.

To me this is the last great SANFL GF.

The trickle over the previous 10 seasons became a flood to the VFL after this year (Kernahan, Motley, McGuinness, Naley, Bradley, Platten and others IIRC)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I know that it is subjective but I think the Glenelg premiership side of 1985 is the best SANFL side that I have ever seen. Many people suggest that the West 1983 side is the best, it certainly had the best attack, but I think that the Glenelg was a better all round side.
18 out of the 20 Glenelg side either played VFL/AFL or played interstate football which to me was at least the equal of VLF/AFL.
I often have said that North were a very, very good side in 1987 but the overall standard had started to slip so much that I only saw three really good games of football that year, where both sides played fantastic football and North, who only lost 3 games for the year, lost one of those 3 really good games (against Port early in the year at Prospect).

Fair call about 85 even though in 86 North did have a side that could beat most VFL sides and beat Melbourne here and Collingwood in Melbourne and the Bays beat that side.

I remember that Port game, a 10,000 strong crowd and Port got out to a large early lead and we mounted a rousing comeback in the third quarter.

Out of interest, what were the other two good games? I'll have a guess that they were: (a) the return match at Alberton, and (b) the mid-season match at the Parade where North came from 6 goals down at half-time in a low-scoring game.

Fab Fantasy Football
No injuries
Both sides in form
No breeze factor
Track dry
Day match
Played at Football Park

85 GL...5-4...10-6...14-10...21-14 [140]
83 WA..4-0....9-2.....12-6.....17-8 [110]

Pre match Odds
Malsportsbet
GL $1-45
WA $ 2-75

I also think that 85GL team is one of the most talented teams in the last 50 years and would beat 85WA most times
If everything mostly clicked for 83WA they could win , they were a brilliant attacking team

Another great match up would be 1980 PA v 1985 GL

The 1980s was arguably the best standard /style of football played in the SANFL

The game against West Adelaide at Football Park. It was a shootout, but a lot of very good football played and the Norwood game. The Port game, although Port came home with a rush was of a much lesser standard, North seemed to be in the time of the year where they were being trained heavily for the finals and didn't play anywhere near their best that day.
I was thinking of the Norwood game as the other one.
Just my opinion and very subjective.
I am not downplaying North's 1987 side, it would have won a flag most years but many of the other teams had started to slip.
I think even though North had lost Antrobus, Robertson, Campbell and Phillips to the AFL from the 1985 side, I believe that the advent of SIms, D Jarman, Burton, J Roberts and Simmons to the side more than counteracted those losses and players like A Jarman, Bennett and Klomp were much improved footballers. What I am saying is that North in 1987 was a better overall side than North in 1985.

Certainly North for most of 1986 were the best side and probably had improved on 1985 but they were insipid in that Grand Final. It seemed to me that Nunan implored them not to fight, so they forgot to fight for the ball.
