Merv Roberts [ Norwood]
Had his 100th birthday on 30/12/2023
This might make him the oldest living SANFL footballer?

Must have been a good footballer on the paddock as he represented SA on 5 occasions

Quaintly dubbed the “Double Century”, Norwood legend Merv Roberts has
celebrated his 100th birthday with a gathering of his fellow Redlegs’ 100-
game footballers.
The Norwood Hall of Fame member and triple premiership player, who wore
No.10 during his 162-game career between 1946 and 1956, reached his
centenary on December 30. Three of the four living Redlegs to have played
100 games in the same guernsey joined him to mark the occasion.
Declan Hamilton, Robbie Neill and Roger Woodcock met Roberts at his home
in Flagstaff Hill to help blow out the candles. Only Lester Ross couldn’t
attend but all four had signed a framed No.10 guernsey which they presented
as a gift from the club.
Despite his footy career coming to a close 70 years ago, Roberts’ recollection
of his time at The Parade was still sharp.
“I seem to have quite a good memory of anything that impresses me,”
Roberts said. “And there were quite a few things to be impressed about
playing football games with players like (Jack) Oatey, (John) Marriott, Doug
Olds and Sam Gallagher.
“They were a team of champions and I can’t help but remember a lot of the
things I did with them. I did enjoy it and I can still remember it.”
A resolute defender, Roberts played five games for SA, and underlined his
courage during a match when he ran back with the flight of the ball to take a
mark just moments before colliding with the point post.
While Roberts played the match out, the post did not, with the force of the
bump causing it to snap.
Woodcock, still heavily involved in the club via its history committee, said
the mini-party was masterminded by Redlegs fan Chris Brown.

Studley might only be 75, but he looks at least 100.
It is better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt
