Whew all credit to the North boys. When was the last time a seniors team more than doubled their score in the last 1/4 and still lost. Even better when did any team that had 50+ points at 3/4 time do that??? Spelly?

5 times a team has more than doubled their score after 3 quarter time, had at least 50 points, and lost.
A further three teams exactly doubled their score after 3 quarter time, had at least 50 points, and lost.

The 5 occasions are the game above, and:

Round 20 1974
Port 6.5 9.5 17.9 20.10 (130)
Glenelg 3.2 5.8 7.13 15.29 (119)
Glenelg, 15105

Round 16 1981
Norwood 3.8 9.14 16.17 22.21 (153)
West 0.2 3.7 7.13 16.18 (114)
Norwood, 9809

Round 7 1987
West 9.3 14.5 20.10 24.12 (156)
Central 3.2 6.5 7.8 15.12 (102)
Elizabeth, 5237

Round 18 1991
Glenelg 5.2 11.5 16.7 19.12 (126)
Sturt 2.3 6.6 8.8 17.11 (113)
Adelaide, 3100

The last match a team has doubled their score in the last quarter and lost is:

Round 12 2006
South 5.8 8.16 20.17 24.18 (162)
Port 1.1 2.2 3.3 8.7 (55)
Noarlunga, 3607

Here is another couple of unrelated stats, but are interesting:

The highest score at three quarter time by a team to eventually lose is 130 points:

Round 14 1976
South 6.3 14.9 18.9 26.11 (167)
Central 10.4 14.7 20.10 23.13 (151)
Adelaide, 4862

The highest score by a team at three quarter time to eventually lose without scoring 100 points as well as the winning team not scoring 100 points, is 94 points:

Round 12 1992
Port 3.4 11.6 13.9 14.14 (98)
Eagles 3.3 7.5 14.10 14.10 (94)
Football Park, 12557 (D/H)

If Sturt had of won that match it would have been the equal greatest comeback from that point.

Round 17 1930
Port 1.3 5.6 7.9 16.12 (108)
Norwood 7.6 11.9 14.14 15.17 (107)
Alberton

Unfortuantely I don't have the crowds for most of that season, so I couldn't say how many, but would have been exciting stuff.

One of the few times I left early.. one of my mates and I were going out getting tanked that night so we agreed to leave at 3/4 and get an early start. 15 min in the last quarter I was doing a u-ey and heading back to Adelaide Oval full pelt.

"REGULAR Footy SA website blogger spell_check revealed an interesting statistic from the last SANFL Round. The North v Sturt under-19 game featured 20 goals in the last quarter. Sturt kicked 11.1 while North managed 9.1. Possibly more entertaining than the flood-plagued AFL."

Cheers, Jimmy, but the stat wasn't really out of the ordinary, just a standard stat for me. :)
