The name change from SAFA to SAFL occured in 1907. This was used as a starting point by Ern Kolosche I believe in the late 60s and the SANFL has used this ever since.

Port Adelaide and West Torrens
Norwood and North Adelaide
Sturt and South Adelaide
West Adelaide and Glenelg
That is how the pairings are generally shown as. They were aligned to the geographical positions - Port and Torrens being the two closest clubs in the North West/West; West and Glenelg in the West/South West; Sturt and South being South of Adelaide; and Norwood and North the East and North.
Each club played each other 4 times - 12 rounds in total. Then each club participated in the McIntyre final four system.
The Grand Final in each year was:
1942 - Port/Torrens 18.12 West/Glenelg 16.13
1943 - Norwood/North 12.10 Port/Torrens 8.13
1944 - Norwood/North 9.7 Port/Torrens 7.13

Geez that Port - Torrens combo was awesome. Played in 3 consecutive finals. Maybe we should merge now. We'd be unbeatable
