Would think a lot would be in strife as Thursday is a massive preparation day. Given the rain and weather forecast those pitches with out covers are in serious danger of not being ready.

English Test captain Mike Gatting's nephew Joe to play cricket for Northern Districts

ENGLISHMAN Joe Gatting has a point to prove this Grade Cricket season - to himself and his new Northern Districts teammates.

Gatting, 24, has returned to Adelaide three seasons after playing for Tea Tree Gully while in town with the Darren Lehmann Academy.

By his own admission, Gatting the nephew of former English Test captain Mike Gatting struggled that summer, scoring 232 runs at 14.5.

Since then he has established himself as a middle-order batsman at English County club Sussex, where he has made 1257 runs at 31.42, and said he was determined to make an impact at Grade level this season.

"I loved it last time I was in Australia. I loved the place (Adelaide) and like the wickets," said Gatting, who will also train part-time with the Lehmann Academy.

"But I had a pretty poor season last time.

"Because I did so bad the first time obviously I want to prove that I can get runs.

"It definitely will spur me on."

In addition, Gatting also is hoping to dispel any belief among his Jets teammates that being susceptible to spin bowling runs in the family.

His uncle Mike will forever be remembered for being clean bowled by Shane Warne's "Ball of the Century" during the 1993 Ashes.

Gatting was skittled by Northern Districts' left-arm tweaker Andrew Perkins while playing for Tea Tree Gully in his previous stint Down Under.

"He called it his Gatting ball," said Joe.

"Apparently it pitched on leg stump and hit off but I'm pretty sure it was a straight ball.

"At training they (Jets teammates) try and bowl spin to me and they mention the Gatting ball.

"I laugh it off ... it's all a bit of fun really.

"They're good lads and I'm hoping I can help the club do well this season."

Gatting played Division One soccer for Brighton and Hove Albion before switching to cricket in 2008.

He was led into soccer by his father, Steve, who played professionally for English Premier League giant Arsenal and Brighton.

But he has no regrets about changing sports and said he was hopeful of following in his uncle's footsteps by playing Test cricket for England.

"I think everyone's dream is playing Test cricket. "But you've got to set yourself little goals and that's the end one."

Do Northern have any home grown talent this season?

Also have Worcester keeper/batsman Ben Cox playing this year. Coxy was at Adelaide last season.

Port Adelaide have forfeited their U16 white game for round 1. What a joke!!!

After forfeiting the majority of last season its great to see them spend so much time recruiting 'A graders' from interstate and other clubs, while doing nothing to promote junior cricket in the state.

Surely with the weather FS both clubs could of come to an agreement to play a one dayer next week.

Also why don't they link in with the ATCA clubs Fulham, Woody Recks, Grange, Port Districts etc and grab a couple of players from each on a rotational basis to fill their team. That is 8 already.

Kelvin Smith backs up his 181 with a fighting 49* after being sent of to hospital to get 3 stitches due to a split cheek - attempted hook. Surely the Redbacks should be considering getting this kid in for a game - has shown some guts that many of their so called guns are yet to display. I know there is a fair gap between As and first class but this kid has the goods. And so what if I'm biased!

Agreed that Kelvin is in wonderful form (his brother James' knock was beautiful yesterday too) but I don't want to see him rushed into the State team too early. This is a huge step and it has led to big problems for a number of young players who have been blooded too early in the past (they get a bit shellshocked).
Isaiah Borgas looked in pretty good touch too, just quietly, and may be worth consideration for SA first.

Saw him bat for nearly two hours on Saturday night. Seemed to handle things pretty well against a strong pace attack.
