Trader - By my reckoning the Xmas Break is 2 weekends just like last season. We play on Sat 21/12 - no games 28/12 and 4/1 - then resume on Sat 11/1. But I assume the LO grades will get the usual 3 weeks off and not resume until 18/1.

Was told this morning that wearing Helmets while batting this season will be compulsory in all grades from this season.
I think common sense prevails here don't we all think?

Don't think it can be made compulsory (strongly advised), but if you don't and you get hit you wont be covered by insurance. Also has to be British standard 7928:2013 helmets.

PDCA have made it compulsory - escalating fines and suspension for non-compliance. Apparently CA and SACA have made it compulsory and any umpire who allows a player to bat without one will be removed as an umpire.

*edit* - it may be different next season, i'm led to believe that CA will have players pay their own insurance component as opposed to the clubs paying it pre-season.

I have heard the same. There would be a few guys in their 30's being asked to wear a helmet for the first time and I expect some won't be happy to the point they may not even play. I think ATCA should have the option for certain players to sign a waiver that hand all responsibility back to the player.
As Arch44 has highlighted, if helmets are compulsory, does this mean they must meet the international standard.
Do wicket keepers have to wear a helmet when up at the stumps?
Who monitors the lower grades where they don't have official umpires?

Yes, they must be the Masuri brand with fixed grill.

Not sure how ATCA will do it, but PDCA will be relaxed on the spec of helmet initially - focus on just getting them worn.. in the lower grades without umpires there will be a push for opposition captains to report players - if they fail to do so and it’s discovered then they’ll be in the firing line as well.

This has been a CA initiative slowly rolled out over past few years - this is the final year of that plan. Apparently competitions relatively large that thought they’d lose plenty because of it have found that not to be the case - people who really want to play will suck it up.

To be honest though, doubt CA would give a rats arse about a mid 30’s or older bloke quitting, they don’t offer a lot to high performance pathways.. they’ll be focussed on the youth and pumping numbers down below up.

Australia Day on Sunday next year so why would it be a week off , I'm sure the next time it falls on a Saturday it will be a week off again as it should be.

As for a $300 lid, you can pick up a Masuri helmet for around $80

We had a trial and kids with spikes made a nice furrow marking centre.
I'm not the only one thinking its unworkable at community level.

Had a game in the lower grades vs Pt districts last year. Scuffed centre marks on a good length was not ideal. Both teams agreed to bowl our fastest bowlers from the end that would be unaffected.
