The Pain, the pain, the pain of it all

I'll start this post off by saying that if I could play cricket every weekend I would still be doing so. The one thing I miss most about SA, even more than being able to watch the Redlegs is to walk out on the field for WYC D Grade, play cricket and have a few cold beers in the pub on a Saturday night.
I wasn't all that good but I was always there. I missed about two games in twenty years and played Indoor cricket all over Adelaide for 14 years. I believe you don't have to be a great, but only get the best out of yourself as you can..for you and your team mates.
Being a silly old fool I set up a competition of my own up here so I could play one or two games a year because I miss the game so much. I played my second match of the year last Sunday (the first was in March) and it has taken until today for my poor old knees to stop aching. In fact my knees are so bad they were hurting after about 12 overs. Every time I contemplate coming out of retirement the social games I play in slap me back into reality.
So tell me boys - how is YOUR comeback going? Ah, getting old is a terrible thing.
regards,
REB

My cricket career;
St Josephs (Murray Bridge) 1991-92, 92-93
Ingle Farm (Adelaide Turf) 1998-99, 99-00
Fitzroy (SAC&CCA- Hard Wicket) 2007-8, ?
Considering I've just outlayed $$'s on equipment, I'm in it for the long haul now...

I've been asked if I'm interested in playing in a 20/20 game in February for Ingle Farm.
I'm dreading it. I probably won't be able to move for a good month after it. I can't even remember the last time i picked up a bat, apart from playing the backyard with the kids.
It's been almost 7 years since I graced (LOL) a cricket field.

I've played against Ingle Farm a couple of times when I played for Clarence Park (that alone shows you how long ago that was) and against the Roys on many occaisons when both clubs were in the Independent Central Cricket Association (again, a long time ago). Did pretty well against the Roys too because of the massive slope that helped me score off my pads.

I was out of the game for about 3 years and went up to the club on the last training night of the season for the annual topless bar maid night and after a few beers i got roped into playing A grade for the last game so they could boost the Bs to try and make the finals (didnt work though). The first day we fielded and in the first hour i reckon i fielded every bloody ball. I felt good at first but then my throws were falling short, and then shorter and so on and so on. I was that stuffed after the days play i couldnt even enjoy the beer and it took me about 4 or 5 days to stop hurting. The following saturday it rained all day and i didnt even get to bat. Thats when I knew it was time to give it away. that was about 9 years ago.

I am still young enough to go around strongly (33) but I have only made the one attempt to retire (in 2002). On the first weekend of the 2002-03 season I went to the races with my folks and the second weekend I was on the NSW/Vic border doing a winery tour/BBQ. On the Thursday before the 2nd Round started, I went to my old club for a drink ONLY and within 20 minutes I was selected in the 3rds. It had transpired that the first round had been washed out both days so in fact I never missed a game!
Glad I did play because I won my only flag (so far) in 2003-04!

I"ll be out there for that night for a run around. I'll just suffer the next day.
I"m trying to remember who I batted with that day.

well you old blokes...... my old man made a comeback @ 48 and won an association batting trophy not bad for a bloke who has no cartilege in his knee. I can't remember him complaining about sore this and sore that but I'm sure he suffered silently. Although in his last game he finished a little disgraced the next season when he was outscored by his daughter in a mens comp
