Really good write ups of each round are appearing on the AEHCA website.

Round 5 A Grade Results

Mount Barker v Wistow

Mount Barker held on for a 46-run win over Wistow to move within touching distance of the top 4. Winning the toss and batting first, the hosts were in a touch of trouble early at 5/80 before some critical late order runs from Deklan Porter (26) and Wayne Buckland (22) got the score up to a commendable 177. Rhys Paterson (27) was the top scorer for Mount Barker whilst the Wistow bowlers shared the honors with five bowlers claiming 2-wickets each.

In reply, Wistow struggled to get starts with seven players failing to score over five (including five ducks). David Kinlough was the sole shining light in the innings, knocking up an impressive 61 to almost drag his team over the line. Hayden Lane (4/40) was the pick of the Mount Barker bowlers with great support from Simon Turk (3/24).

Bremer/Callington v Hahndorf

Hahndorf retained their spot-on top of the ladder with a cruisy victory over Bremer/Callington. Bremer/Callington won the toss and batted first but were in immediate trouble Jarrad Tait running through their top order on his way to claim 5/33 from nine overs. Chris Schilling provided some resistance with a clean hitting 36 to get Bremer/Callington to a total of 115.

Andrew Baker (47) ensured there were to be no hiccups in the run chase combining with Tait (18) and Graydon Brand (21*) to get Hahndorf over the line. Mitchell Crisp bowled admirably for Bremer/Callington to take 3/28 from nine overs.

Nairne v Strathalbyn

Nairne claimed a vital four points to move into 5th spot after inflicting Strathalbyn’s first loss for the season. The Razorbacks won the toss and batted first with Robert Cook (47) getting the host’s off to a solid start. Luke Timmins (83*) took control of the innings once Cook was dismissed guiding Nairne to 5/198 from their allotted 45 overs. Timmins’ innings included 9 fours and 2 sixes. Brayden Gaiter was the pick of the Strathalbyn bowlers claiming 2/41.

In reply, it was a story of Strathalbyn batters getting good starts but not being able to go on with it. Captain Mark Abbott (31) and Steven Schofield (20) looked to give the Stallions the upper hand early but tight bowling from the Razorbacks ensured a comfortable 59 run victory. Jacob Sadler (3/28) and Michael Harden (2/16) were the best of the Nairne bowlers.

Lobethal v Woodside

Lobethal claimed their first win of the season against a more fancied opponent in Woodside. The Warriors won the toss and elected to bat but were in immediate trouble with wickets falling left, right and centre. Left reeling at 8/30, Woodside bowler Chris Baschiera (32) played a brilliant counter-attacking innings to get the Warriors to 99 and a small chance at victory. Mitchell Weeks (3/6) and Matt Martin (3/24) were the chief destroyers for Lobethal.

They say that the small totals are the trickiest chases, and this proved to be no exception with Woodside making it hard work for Lobethal. Weeks (22) again was pivotal in the match with Lachlan Bates guiding his team home with an unbeaten 27 as the Tigers claimed the win six down with four overs left to play. Sam Luck (2/11) and Dale Robinson (2/20) claimed two wickets a piece for Woodside.

No A4 grade

Yeah, 25 teams nominated this season, down from 27 (Basket Range and Eastern Ranges both down to 1 side). Only 4 clubs had an A4 last year, so I guess it was scrapped.

As a reference point, it seems participation peaked 2015/16, with 37 team nominations (which included 4 from Happy Valley and 1 from Clapham).

Going back into mid to late 80's from memory the clubs and number of teams they had were
Aldgate 3/4, Stirling 3, Basket Range 2, Uraidla 3, Hahndorf 3, Meadows 3, Happy Valley 3, Aberfoyle Park 2, Mylor 1/2, Bridgewater 3, Mt Lofty 3, Scott Creek 2, Iron Bank/Cherry Gardens 2/3, Lenswood Rangers 3, Onkaparinga 3, Clarendon 2.
Think all 4 grades had 10 teams.
The clubs and numbers varied over those years and obviously some clubs have moved on or don't exist any more.

Heard a rumour that two district A Grade cricketers might leave their current clubs and play for a team in the HCA and A&EH respectively
. Ones currently playing B Grade and the other is playing A Grade.
Could swing results going forward, especially because they are both class players. Dont want to name names incase they see out the season then ill look silly, but be sure to look for two new names first week of December if they pull the pin.

Also why doesnt the A&EH make A Grade teams play in the 20/20’s? Would love to see Woodside, Strath and Hahndorf playoff and make the comp more competitive?

Another interesting round in A&EHCA with a couple of NEAR upsets and a few surprisingly easy wins
Strath and L Creek both survived huge scares from Cellar Dwellers Wistow and B/Callington respectively.

Strath struggled with the bat on their home turf in making a modest 165 which was a good recovery from 6/68 and 7/92. One would still expect Strath to defend that and they did but not without a fright as Daniel Jenner opened the batting and dominated the Wistow innings making 88 out of Wistows 148 to fall just 17 runs short.

The other near upset was Creeks only making 136 on their home turf which left the door open for the Cobras. At 6/117 with still 10 overs to go it was almost a formality the Cobras would pull off the upset especially with their highly rated recruit Mishal Kahn still at the crease on 60 but with the loss of 2 quick wickets on that score the pressure got to him and he also succumbed on 117. The last pair edged their way to 125 and within 12 of victory with still 6 overs to go before their luck ran out.

Lobethal and Nairne looked to be a even match up with victory to either team even at this still relatively early stage of the season being vital for both to stay in the finals race. Nairne struggled to 9/127 off their 45 overs on the traditionally very slow Lobethal outfield and going on the previous match their that total would still take some getting. Well how wrong was that as Weeks and Mathews wiped off the target without loss in a touch under 20 overs

Woodside even with a few key players injured were way too good for a struggling Mt Barker racking up a huge 189 run win

One quite amazing result caught my eye in the B Grade match between Macclesfield and Hahndorf
Maccy batting 1st were 9/129 before recovering to 207 with a 78 last wicket stand.
Hahndorf in their chase slumped to 9/139 but as did Maccy they recovered to level the scores with 1 ball to go which was duly dispatched over the fence for 6 by Tim Knappstein who was the hero finishing on 85* batting at no. 9
Both teams having last wicket stands of over 70 would surely be some kind of record?
Interesting to that Macclesfield were bowled out in only 29 overs leaving a whopping 11 overs unused whilst Hahndorf used all 40

Playing the T20 comp is voluntary
This is the 6th year of the Comp and its been disappointing some teams that have entered have not made more of an effort to field their best teams.
Certainly playing the games on Sundays and Thursday nights dont suit everyone and programming triple headers last year without a lot of consultation saw a few Clubs revolt it and forfeited their games. The feedback was clubs didnt want to play on Sundays so this years comp has been programmed on Thursday evenings but when it came to nominating this still wasn't appealing to some of the prominent Clubs as you mention.
Not sure what the answer is to make it more enticing? The winner being the Associations Rep in the Statewide comp i would have thought may have been incentive enough? In recent times this has resulted in Nairne and Langhorne Creek both going on to win State Titles at Adelaide Oval and this year Lobelthal are through to the Quarter Finals.

In relation to Hahndorf and 2020s if you look at our A-grade side we are on the older side and we would struggle to get a side together for the 2020s. I think in future years as our promising crop of 16 to 19-year-olds get more experience I think you will see us put a team in. I know personally playing on a sunday is just not something I can do anymore with a young family.

Some incredibly positive results for HCC on the weekend. Our a2s notched up their first win and as Jim already mentioned Knapps wound back the clock and got them over the line on the last ball.

One third of the way through the season already:

Gumeracha (50)- Plenty of depth, rumored return of C. Sumner will make them tough to beat
Lenswood Ranges (50)- Playing more consistently than last season
Cambrai (40)- Perhaps reply a little too much on Greiger with the bat, but keep doing the job with the ball
Palmer (30)- Outside of Rathjen struggling with the bat
Eden Valley (30)- Have been competitive despite unsettled line up
Paracombe (20)- Too many quality players missing from previous years to be a challenger
Birdwood (10)- A couple of good young quicks but their batting still disappoints
Mt Torrens/Charleston (10)- Wont win many games with their bowling attack. Had to forfeit in R4.

The B's Gumeracha and perhaps surprisingly Eden Valley lead the way, Paracombe and Cambrai should round out the top 4. Palmer competitive on and off, Birdwood battling, while at Lenswood we recently split our players across two sides which'll make finals more challenging.

How are they picking the two sides for Lenswood in B Grade? Are they selecting the two sides to be as even as possible to give them both a good chance of winning or is one the 'B' team and then the other a 'C' team?

The TVCA bylaws required us to name 8 players in each team that can only play in that particular side. We tried to make the teams relatively even, but were mindful of keeping a group of half dozen guys who all joined the club on the eve of the first round together also. Will be a bit of a balancing act trying to keep people happy.

Should we be fortunate enough to have 3 teams next season, may look at fielding a team in the AEHCA C Grade which would allow us to pick the second and third teams on merit. But we'll worry about then..

A&EHCA Round 7 Wrap courtesy of the A&EHCA website: http://aehca.sa.cricket.com.au/pageitem.aspx?id=172827&id2=1&eID=3140&entityID=3140&fbclid=IwAR2zqU1lSXEbnGr5G4CPosGRH3zTyYF-YkUJi8NXOH7D9z_0JEVVNJrQtN0

Langhorne Creek 214 (BC O'Dea 55, M Tonkin 40, B Warren 29, D Robinson 3/20, J Druwitt 3/34, DB Wescombe 2/25 def Woodside 9/203(cc) (S Pullen 62, DB Wescombe 39, RT Moore 27, B Warren 4/35) by 11 runs

Langhorne Creek hosted Woodside knowing that a win could bring them in line with Strathalbyn on the ladder, with the Stallions having the bye this round. The ‘Creek also handed a Club debut to Brodie O’Dea from Pekina/Carrieton, who watched as his fellow opening partner Nathan Wunderstiz was dismissed in the first over of the day, but would combine with Matt Tonkin (40) in an 80-run stand before being dismissed for 55. Contributions from the two Bens in Warren (29) and McLeod helped in posting 214, with credit to Dale Robinson (3/20) and Jeremy Druwitt (3/34) who lead the Warriors’ attack well.

The Creek claimed Tyson Reichstein (3) early, but saw similar resistance to what they pushed in their batting as David Wescombe (39) scored the bulk of the runs until his dismissal which was closely followed by Bradley, both on 64. Samuel Pullen (62) was joined by Richard Moore (27) who put on 85 for the fourth wicket, however they both fell within 20 runs of one another either side of another wicket, to leave them 6/166 and from there, they fought but fell 11 runs short after their 45 overs. Despite going win-loss in their last five matches, Woodside still remain in the top four, a game clear in fourth.

Mount Barker 135 (SM Turk 46, M Martin 4/27, D Huxter 3/25) def by Lobethal 2/136 (BJ Matthews 52, D Norsworthy 35*) by 8 wickets

Another dominant display with the ball and a comfortable run chase for the second week in the row got Lobethal the points over Mount Barker, their third win in a row. Mount Barker won the toss and batted first, but lost both openers to be 2/21. This was then followed by a couple of useful partnerships lead by Simon Turk (46), however they never recovered once he fell at 5/87, as the fairly regular procession of wickets saw the Burras fold for 135. Matt Martin returned his best figures of the season in removing both openers and four out of the top five to claim 4/24, while Dave Huxter took 3/25 in providing great support.

The response was reasonably comfortable for the Tigers, only losing Weeks at 1/38 and Matthews (52) within 16 runs of the target, having put on 82 for the second wicket. The run rate maintained around five an over as they reached the target in the 27th over. The loss for Mount Barker puts them back a game from Lobethal who are knocking on the door of the top four.

Nairne 146 (LO Timmins 40, B Montgomerie 3/22, MJ Shanahan 3/31, C Blesing 2/27, JP Tait 2/44) def by Hahndorf 7/149 (K Dawe 52*, SD Rowe 2/36, MJ Harden 2/44) by 3 wickets

Nairne won the toss choosing to bat first and pick up the pace of the top four, with no greater challenge than playing the current ladder leaders. Luke Timmins (40) lead the way as captain, but unfortunately the next highest scorer was 19. Hahndorf’s bowlers showed their class, with four bowlers claiming wickets, lead by Michael Shanahan (3/31) and Benny Montgomerie (3/22), while despite going wicketless, Kris Dawe went at under three runs an over (0/21).

A spirited performance from the Razorbacks’ bowlers saw an early wicket taken, and then followed up soon after with three in a rush to have Hahndorf 4/63. However, Dawe was a presence at one end through this, in compiling 52 in just under two hours that would eventually see them home, but not before seven wickets were taken in total. Samuel Rowe (2/36) and Michael Harden (2/44) were useful change bowlers.

Wistow 65 (M Khan 6/24 NM Williams 2/1 M Crisp 2/13) def by Bremer/Callington 7/286 (M Khan 59, S Leigh 46, A Eubaid 43*, S Howie 33, JT Fitzgerald 31, HG Burgess 2/27, S Nettle 2/44, S Smith 2/60) by 221 runs

Bremer/Callington put in a strong performance with the bat in compiling the highest score of the A Grade round. Despite wickets falling throughout their 45 overs, there were even contributions and a number of well yielded partnerships. Mishal Khan (59) hit his second consecutive half-century while Stewart Leigh opening up made 46 and Arslan Eubaid (43*) was not out at the close of the innings which saw them post 7/286.

The Wistow innings never got going, as Khan backed up his batting with 6/24 including the last wicket of the match. He was supported by Mitchell Crisp (2/13) and Nicholas Williams (2/1) as Wistow were bowled out for 65. The Cobras now have their first win of the season, relegating the Echidnas to last place.

The Meyer Shield scheduled to be hosted by Kangaroo Island has been transferred to be hosted by the Murray Towns CA as well as KI withdrawing their team from the Carnival, both the result of the recent devastating fires.
With only 5 teams competing the reigning title holders Hills will have a bye 1st up
Other games are
Sat Jan 25th
Murray Towns v Great Southern
Torrens Valley v A&EHCA

Sunday Jan 26th
The 2 winners from Saturday
Hills play the narrowest loser from Saturday
The Biggest Loser on Saturday are Eliminated

Monday Jan 27th
The 2 highest ranked teams play off

Be interesting if any Associations are tempted to alter their initial squads given that some players may well be available now that wernt prepared to go to KI ?

From what I’ve heard a few from TVCA ruled themselves out due to the KI travel factor. As of last night we only had 11 certain starters, with 5 from Gumeracha, 4 from Lenswood, and 1 each from Palmer and Eden Valley.

Kangaroo Island are back in, so will revert to a 6 team completion. A good outcome.

Final TVCA squad:

Snoad (C), J. Druwitt. S. Druwitt, M. Hannaford (Lenswood), A. Fidge, B. Sumner, A. Mapstone (VC), S. Atkins, R. Dutschke (Gumeracha), J. Roesler, T. Orchard-Roesler (Eden Valley), J. Wollard (Palmer)

Batting is pretty thin, with the likes of Rathjen, Grieger, Medlow and S. Barnes unavailable, and of course no Rose Park contingent this season.

Day 1:

MTCA v GSCA
KICA v AEHCA

3 rounds remaining in the TVCA:

Gumeracha (120)- Keep on winning, plenty of depth with their B’s sitting top also
Cambrai (115) – Have secured a home final. Take on Gumeracha this week for top spot
Lenswood (85) – Just 2 wins in the past 6 outings. 3 very narrow losses to Gum proving costly
Palmer (75) – Generally come good in February before finals. Batting hasn’t been firing this season
Paracombe (75) - Have perhaps exceeded expectations, but costly lost last week against EV at home
Eden Valley (60) – Two wins against Paracombe, a win against Cambrai, and have pushed Lenswood twice. Lack the depth of the top 4 sides.
Mt Torrens (45) – Really battling since xmas to get a team on the park, having to rely on some stalwarts. With no B Grade it’s a challenging period.
Birdwood (25) – Another wooden spoon coming up, but a chance for a win this week against Mt Torrens.

In the B’s Gumeracha and Paracombe lead the way, EV will play finals, while Cambrai have a 2 win break on 5th placed Lenswood Foresters, who started the season 4 weeks behind everybody else. Lenswood Centrals and Birdwood to fight it out for the spoon.

TVCA to play HCA in the final of the U21s Figg Cup.

Woodside have missed the Finals in A Grade for the 1st time since entering the A&EHCA in the season of 2011/12 finishing in 5th spot this season.

Lobethal after finishing 5th last season after winning 8 of their last 9 matches have taken Woodsides spot with Strath , Hahndorf and L Creek the other 3 teams maintaining their spot in the Finals.

1st Semi Final
Lobethal (3rd) v L Creek (4th) at Lobethal
Since losing their first 3 matches of the season, Lobethal have been undefeated and hit the Finals as the FORM team of the comp and will face off against the other Tigers of the Comp, reigning Premiers L Creek. Creeks will be hoping to emulate last years incredible Premiership coming from 4th spot and winning 3 away Finals in a row. Last year they hit the Finals on a roll of 5 successive wins and had momentum unlike this season where they have played little cricket in the last 2 months with wash outs and Byes and have been inconsistent when they have played.
It looks like it could be a cold damp day at Lobethal on Saturday and whichever sides batsmen can hold their nerve on the traditionally very slow outfield there could go a long way to deciding who progresses to Sundays Prelim Final

2nd Semi Final
Strathalbyn (1st) v Hahndorf (2nd) at Strathalbyn
Strath have been the most consistent team all year and deserve their top spot whilst Hahndorf have done well to finish 2nd and hold off the fast finishing Lobethal by beating leading contenders L Creek and Strath the last 2 weeks and earn the Double Chance.
The pressure is on BOTH teams to win the flag this year as Strath havent tasted success since 1997/98 whilst Hahndorfs last flag was 2001/02 after losing the unlosable GF last year.
Both teams may well face off in the GF in the following week but im tipping Strath to be the 1st one there and will be great to see an A Grade Grand Final played on Turf

A2 Grade
Macclesfield have finished top again and will be looking to avenge last years GF loss and maybe springboard their way back into the A Grade Comp which would make it a desirable 10 team comp again.

B Grade
L Creek have proven to be the best team for the year to finish top and its theirs to lose but have to deal with the Brad Horsell one man show for Mt Barker in the Semi Final 1st. Horsell has made an incredible 1053 runs for the season so far with 5 tons  and 4 half centuries with 2 180+ scores. If Creeks get him for 4 as they did the only time they played this year they'll surely win.

C Grade
Strathalbyn finished top clearly and would be a massive shock if they don't win it. Their batting line up would towel up most A2 bowling attacks

Thats incredible about Lobethal.

Were they missing players in the first 3 games or something.

Just unusual to see such big turnarounds in form in cricket.

Nah, Lobey had pretty much their same team as they have now.
Their first 3 matches were against fellow finalists Strath, Hahndorf and L Creek so not real surprising they lost them, since then they've beaten all teams below them twice and reversed the 1st round losses in the 2nd round except Hahndorf which was abandoned due to the Fires.

Thankfully the forecast for the weekend has been amended and things look a bit warmer and dryer than 1st forecast

So JJ they play the Semi's on the Sat and the Prelim on the Sunday? Interesting concept, makes it hard for the old blokes to back up though!

Palmer to face Gumeracha yet again in the TVCA A Grade FInal at Birdwood. The Bears defeated Cambrai by 47 runs in the semi, while the Magpies held on by 4 runs in a low scoring game against Paracombe. This will be the 4th time the clubs have met in the Grand Final during the post-Lobethal and Woodside era which started 9 years ago. The Magpies will take a vastly different team into the decider than last season's, but I suspect the result will be similar and Palmer will win.

Gumeracha play 4th placed Cambrai in the B Grade final at Lenswood. The Skunks upset ladder leaders Paracombe in a low scoring game, while Gumeracha and Eden Valley played out a tie, which meant that the 2nd placed Magpies progressed. The last time Gum and Cambrai met in the GF it was also at Lenswood, a game which happened to also end in a tie. Tipping the Magpies to win this time.
