There are a number of good ovals out there..
The new Golden Grove oval is a great surface, even in the middle of winter
Salisbury Oval was always good, because of the open spaces and the supporters always gave a hard time to everyone

As for Bad ones
Tea Tree Gully was terrible after June time.... BUT
Modbury was the worst ground because not only was there no grass before the rain.. but after the rain it smelt like cat piss....
Then there was the day they played a game at foxfield Athelstone, where a bloke from Full Back kicked it in from a point down the hill (and down wind) and a mark was taken about 15m out from goal....

Salisbury oval is a good one, played many a wet final there. As for Tea Tree Gully being one of the worst, a few years back you were lucky to see grass in winter, but since a number of drainage upgrades, it has been pretty goo for the last couple of seasons. The turf wicket will always be a little boggy.

Played a grand final agaisnt tea tree gully on a oval that looked like that. think it was cambelltown magill oval. was a disgrace

If your talking about 2001 GF Carey, I rekon that was Payneham Oval. It was disgraceful. They do have a good setup tho. United at Long Plains do have one of the best surfaces around tho. Mypolonga in the RMFL is a good one too. Ovingham is like a junior primary oval.

I liked Tailem, but I didn't really think it was that small. I realise that it is by far the smallest oval in the RMFL, especially compared to Mannum and Imps, but its a lot bigger than some of the ovals I've played on in town.

Best oval from the GSFL and SFL is by far Goolwa, when the clubrooms and changerooms are re-developed will be even better. Great ground for cricket also, like a lawn bowls green!
Wouldn't mind playing a game on Port Elliot again, that has been kept in great shape. Yankalilla and Strath aren't bad. Myponga is better these days but still definately way to soft and the slope from the centre out is shocking. Port Noarlunga wasn't bad last time i was there, had some great GF days there, cove and lonsdale are awful (o'sullivans beach was just as bad). Played a game in 2001 at Brighton with a duckpond in the north west corner when the croquet club overflowed. Flaggies used to bad. Happy Valley is quite good. Marion is rat poo.

Best-Goolwa, Port Elliot, Strath, Enc Bay, Port Noarlunga, Happy Valley, Aldinga, Yankalilla.

Worst-Cove, Myponga, Willunga, Brighton, Victor in recent years, Lonsdale, Morphettville Park.

Surely Noarlunga should get a run in the best list. Easily the best ground in the SFL

yeh slipped my mind being hidden away down there, haven't been there in a few years is the surface still immaculate? It is a bit narrow though by memory.

Read here that uni oval is regarded as "good". Geez, in early 80's it was a bog - 4 goals could win you the game. Played vs St Dominics at their home ground once - rock hard and so small that one of the opposition was always running into you. Played at Glenunga once when the visitors changeroom had 3 inches of water in it - only place it was dry (well at least pre-game) was the showers! Always blowing a gale at Henley so hated it. Apart from the supporters, another reason I hated broadview was kicking for goal at the non-clubhouse end. In the depths of winter the sun was right over the goal umps head and one had to "use the force" when taking a set shot. Any ground after a muddy period - the centre patch dries to that crusty uneven surface which loves twisting ankles and rasping off skin.

I really enjoyed playing at Rivvies. A typical port side. The communal shower always brought up some great comments and seemed to promote some camradarie for later beers in the club. Also played in the coldest game ever there - frozen stumps for hands, trainers running out hot water, and the green ginger came out at 1/4 time instead of 3/4! Also loved it at Rosewater - all my spooner team-mates hated it, but i just loved the "real battlers footy club" feel and the comments from the crowd were always priceless. Always good for a beer & a chat post game too.

I agree, the old communal showers at Rivvies were great. Long gone though, a victim of the clubroom renovation a few years back.

Is that where the home side got ALL the changeroom and the visitors got a dogbox? Shitehouse for a trainer when it is a challenge for the players to see who can drop the smelliest sh*t before a game.. :?

Yeah, i admit our visitor changerooms are tiny. We only had limited room when the renos were done, so not much priority was given to visiting teams space. At least the showers are hot though

Kersbrook's old oval the one that was built on a quarry. well it felt like it was played there only once and that was enough.

Seaton will be the worst in div 1 by a mile. Rucking in their centre circle is downright dangerous. They should be forced to fix it. Changerooms are probably the smallest too.

Sick of people bagging the TTG oval because of how it used to be. Sure, it has been an absolute mud pit in the past, but the council has spent a whole heap of time and effort on making it a great deck.

4 or 5 years ago the oval was very ordinary during the middle of winter, but now the drainage has been dramatically improved. This year it should be one of the better decks in Div 1.

end of rant.

he he, very true FC.
Nowadays teams would be jealous if there was some mud on our oval!!

After hearing a bloke from SA Water talk at the delegates meeting on Monday night, the next few seasons could be very interesting if the drought conditions don't improve.
