SA FOOTY PHILosophy - #13 Win Some, Lose Some.

I’ve been asked by a few people if LifeFM is broadcasting the Magarey Medal again, after taking the live count around the world for the first time last year.

Alas despite LifeFM being proactive in seeking to again cover the medal under the exact same arrangement as 2008, an agreement with the SANFL could not be reached.

I can’t speak on the stations behalf but personally I’m disappointed there may well be no live count for die hard SANFL fans to follow this year..

On a brighter note I am please to advise that an agreement has been reached with the SANFL for Peter Argent & I to produce an official 2010 SANFL Season Guide.

In recent seasons a Media / Season Guide has come under various forms and structure. Initially it was a n unofficial photocopied ring bound publication in 2006, raising money for the Royal Society for The Blind and involving about 30 people in the process. Then in 2008 Peter Argent & I put together another unofficial guide in about two months again with many people helping out.

Last year the SANFL wished to produce an official guide so Peter & I agreed to contribute content whilst the league had overall responsibility for formatting & producing the booklet.

For 2010 we have reached what both parties believe to be the optimum structure. Peter Argent & I will be responsible for compiling, printing and distributing the guide but the league will both give it's public support to the project and ensure it meets their content and presentation standards.

With an agreement finalised this early Peter & I are confident of putting together the best SANFL guide yet, so stay tuned for more information in the off-season.

Overall 2009 SANFL crowds are still down from 2008 (a special year give an extra non AFL weekend) but they are still higher than any other year going back to 2003.

Most clubs overall have seen a reduction in attendances across all games, only West & the Eagles improving.

Rankings are pretty stable except Port replacing Sturt for 2nd and West replacing South for 8th

CROWD WATCH – CLUB BY CLUB HOME GAMES

There has been a level of equalisation with home match crowds this season compared with 2008.

Based on 2008 rankings the top four clubs ( Glenelg, Norwood, Central & Port) all recorded decreases whilst the bottom five clubs (Sturt, North, Eagles, South & West) all recorded increases.

In 2008 the gap between Glenelg (1st) and West (9th) was 3,488 per game, in 2009 that had shrunk to 2,069 per game.

Numerically, North had the biggest increase whilst Glenelg had the biggest decrease BUT for the second straight season the Tigers had the highest home match attendances.

Rankings are almost unchanged from 2008 with the exception of Sturt who have lept from 5th to 2nd in the process dropping Norwood, Central and Port one spot each.


CENTRAL

2009 - 31,392 from 10 games (avg 3,139 ranking 4th)
2008 - 36,981 from 10 games (avg 3,698 ranking 3rd)
Movement - drop 559 per game (15.1% drop)

Notes
- 3th straight decrease in home crowds. Was at #1 in the league with 4115pg in 2006 (when lights introduced) but then dropped to 3830 (still #1) in 2007 and so on.
- Surprisingly their highest attendance was 4,489 against the Eagles in Round 1. Not helped by poor weather for its two drawcard games (Anzac Day v Glenelg & Rd 22 v Sturt) and having two home games against South who have a 100km round trip to make.
- Over the last two seasons Central average 4,084 for night games and 2,967 for day games.



EAGLES

2009 - 22,394 from 10 games (avg 2,239, ranking 7th)
2008 – 20,558 from 10 games (avg 2,056, ranking 7th)
Movement – increase 183 per game (8.9% increase )

Notes
- Eagles not helped in 2009 with 2 South home games that averaged 1391 each. Other 8 games averaged 2,451.
- Last two seasons the three games at Thebarton have averaged 1,987 each, the 17 at Woodville 2,175.
- In the seven years since I started recording figures in 2003, Eagles home crowd averages have been kept in a fairly narrow range between 2056 and 2600 each season.
- One of only two clubs (with West) to have an increase in both home game and overall crowds in 2009.


GLENELG

2009 - 40,236 from 10 games (avg 4,024, ranking 1ST)
2008 – 51,583 from 10 games (avg 5,158, ranking 1ST)
Movement – decrease 1,134 per game (21.9% decrease)

Notes
- Glenelg have led the league in home match attendances for the last two seasons.
- Back in 2004, Tigers were ranked 7th (below Eagles) with just 2,563 per game (that’s a 57% increase in 5 years)
- Glenelg’s lowest home crowd of 2009 was 2,823 v West in Rd 11 which is 47 people more than South’s highest home crowd of 2009 (2,876 v Norwood @ Encounter Bay).


NORTH

2009 – 27,864 from 10 games (avg 2,786 ranking 6th)
2008 - 24,422 from 10 games (avg 2,443 ranging 6th)
Movement – increase 343 per game (14.1% increase )

Notes
- Largest numeric increase both in terms of numbers and percentage in the SANFL this season.
- Increase comes after 4 seasons of decreases (highest was avg of 3,462 per game in 2004)


NORWOOD

2009 – 35,780 from 10 games (avg 3,578 ranking 2nd)
2008 - 39,011 from 10 games (avg 3,901 ranking 2nd)
Movement – decrease 323 per game (8.3% decrease)

Notes
- Led league in home attendances in 2005 (3,360 pg @ Norwood)
- Hosted highest single game crowd of the season. (6,572 v Port in Rd 1)
- Decrease comes after four seasons in home crowd increases.
- In 2009, Average per night game is 4,727 per day game is 2,429


PORT

2009 – 29,905 from 10 games ( avg 2,991 ranking 5th)
2008 – 34,233 from 10 games (avg 3,433 ranking 4th)
Movement – decrease 442 per game (12.9% decrease)

- Magpies were visitors in the highest crowds for the season at
: Norwood – 6,572 (Rd 1)
: Gliderol Stadium, Glenelg – 6,276 (Rd 10)
: Woodville – 3,042 (Rd 14)
: City Mazda Stadium, Richmond – 3,036 (Rd 19)
- In 2009, an average of 773 more people watched Port away games than at Alberton.
- Magpies “away game” average of 3,764 per game is highest in the league


SOUTH

2009 – 20,025 from 10 games (avg 2,003 ranking 8th)
2008 – 19,306 from 10 games (avg 1,931 ranking 8th)
Movement – increase 72 per game (3.7% increase)

Notes
- 4th straight season Panthers have had an increase in home match crowds
- First time South have averaged 2,000 per home games since moving full time to Noarlunga in 1996
- First time since moving to Noarlunga that home crowds averaged more than away crowds (1970 per game)
-Over the last three seasons, the two Easter games at Encounter Bay averaged 2,762, the 27 at Noarlunga averaging 1,938.


STURT

2009 – 36,147 from 10 games (avg 3,615 ranking 2nd)
2008 – 33,339 from 10 games (avg 3,334 ranking 5th)
Movement – increase of 281 per game (12.6% increase)

Notes
- Only club to rise in the league rankings in 2009 (up from 5th to 2nd)
- 3rd straight season of home game increases (up from 2,471pg in 2006)
- Includes Rd 12 home game at Adelaide Oval v Glenelg (6,359)


WEST

2009 – 19,547 from 10 games (avg 1,955 ranking 9th)
2008 – 16,701 from 10 games (avg 1,670 ranking 9th)
Movement – increase of 285 per game (17.1% increase)

Notes
- Highest percentage increase in the SANFL Home Crowds in 2009.
- Also has highest percentage increase in SANFL all crowds in 2009 (15.4%)
- Over last three seasons West’s 2 home games in the Riverland average 2,347 whilst the 28 games at City Mazda Stadium, Richmond average 1,888.

Sandover Medal live broadcast
Tuesday, 08 September 2009 18:17 .

Monday's WAFL Sandover Medal Count will be broadcast live from the Perth Exhibition Convention Centre by 990am 6RPH Information Radio.

It will be the seventh consecutive season that 990am will broadcast the Sandover Medal count, which is the only live coverage of the Western Australian Football League’s night of nights.

Coverage will begin at 7pm on Monday, September 14 and include interviews with special guests, talkback, panel discussion and of course the counting of all the votes from the 23 home and away rounds.
