SA Footy Reflections - Part 2

Postby redandblack » Tue Dec 28, 2010 7:35 pm

By 'redandblack'

It’s a bit of a worry that an SA Footy topic on things that give you the shits has far more posts than the things you rate. In fact, it has more posts than nearly any other topic, although I’m reliably informed that a topic in the Gambling Forum has reached 1000 pages. I don’t go in there, or the Regionals, or one or two others. Like many, I presume, I tend to stick to my favourite forums and occasionally look in others from time to time.

I’ve never posted on the ‘shits’ thread. I’ll do it here instead. The thing that gives me the proverbials most of all is when a poster replies to one of my well thought out posts with something devastating that proves I was wrong. This happens often. When it does, you’re faced with 3 choices.

First, you can ignore it totally and hope it goes away. I do this often. Secondly, you can try to bluff your way through by attacking the poster and implying he or she doesn’t know what they’re talking about. I do this often. Lastly, you can seize on a minor error the poster has made, so that you can ignore the main thrust of their argument. I do………..

Some other posters, I have to say, make an art form of this particular defence.

Posters proving I was wrong are bad enough, but it’s equally upsetting when you post something you (and only you) realize is the work of a genius, only for it to be totally ignored. You await a reply, only for none to be forthcoming. Worse, a reply ensues, answering the post just before yours. Oh well, such is life.

I do have some genuine grizzles. I’m a bit of a pedant when it comes to grammar. I’m pleased to say that a few kindred souls on here are the same. None of us are popular.

That won’t stop me from enjoying some of SA Footy’s most popular contributions to the English language. I could of listed many, win or loose. I encourage the profligate use of apostrophe’s whenever a plural appear’s and I’m in rapture’s, not when its needed in it’s, but just for it’s beauty when its not needed.

Yes, I know the previous paragraph might of made me more unpopular, but it would have (sorry, of) given me the shits not to have got it off my chest.

I suspect I’ve become more unpopular lately (even more than when I started a thread about the mighty Roosters once). It’s a lonely road to spring to the defence of the AFL. It’s (sorry, its) un SAFooty like. We all know it’s (normal transmission resumed) an article of faith on here that:

AFL football has no redeeming features at all.

AFL is best described as GAYFL.

Always refer to the Crows or Port by using Cows or Powder Puffs or similar. This proves the point.

The AFL exists solely to smash the SANFL out of existence.

Andrew Demetriou is the devil.

Our footy is the only footy worth watching. (I have a confession. I once watched Geelong v Collingwood instead of South v Eagles at Noarlunga). Yes, I know, shame.

The SANFL Commissioners exist only to smash the SANFL out of existence.

The new Champions’ League is an AFL plot to smash the SANFL out of existence.

Etc, etc….

In the event that a poster replies undeniably proving I’m wrong, refer to paragraph 3.

If nobody replies, I shall sulk.

At least no-one can reply to the post before this one.

What else sets SA Footy apart? Human nature, of course. Posting on here invariably means you will decide that certain posters are cretins. Faced with this, you have 2 options. You can do the sensible thing and not reply to their posts or you can reply by hurling insults and starting a feud. At last count, option (2) was leading by 98% to 2%. I believe the 2% were errors.

Posting on SA Footy reveals much. Some posters are clearly on the wrong forum. I often wonder if their frequently expressed sexual fixations mean that their porn forums show the best players for Centrals or Westies. Check the forum first, boys.

Others are cleverer. No matter what the Forum or topic, they’ll post something about their footy team. Often. Always.

Finally, for my sins, I’m a Moderator. What goes on there has to remain a secret, but suffice to say each of us Mods has had our moments. I’ve been in strife many a time, but rescued each time by another friendly Moderator.

I think I’m the same as all of us on here, friend or (cyber) foe, though. When I’m looking for something to engage me, to interest me, to inform me or to stir me to action, SA Footy always rescues me.

Well written the Redandblack. I am the last one who should comment on certain things. But that is one of the best reads I have read in a while on here. We can all have a laugh and a joke on here but at the same time we need to look and be more careful on what we write. Thank you for the top read.

I have learned that when in a heated debate on SAFooty it's important to double check anything you post as fact because just getting one minor thing wrong, and having that pointed out by your "opponent", can completely derail your argument. Even if your overall argument is sound it just needs the  icon against a factual error to pull the rug from under your feet especially if you were arguing against the majority. So Google is your friend!

If on those rare occasions I am proven wrong 8) I also find myself taking one of R&B's 3 options. I am also guilty of editing and posting a work of art only to be deflated when the thread goes on as though my post never existed. :)

Another lesson I have learned is the "save to drafts" function. Many times in a heated topic I type up some response and save it to drafts to get it off my chest. The idea being that I will calm down and go back and edit and post it. Every single time I have forgotten the draft existed by the time I come to clear the drafts out 3 months later!

A thoroughly enjoyable read R&B!!

I believe that your defence of the AFL and related conspiracy theories is generally justifiable (and correct).

I also believe that in an effort to maintain that stand, balanced perspective can be marred when some instances of (IMHO) validity opposing your stance arise.

That is not meant to be an attack on your contribution's by any means, as I'm sure I would be just as guilty at times and expect %99 of other posters suffer from the same behaviour.

And what is that we all have in common?

Well, we all have biases, and they all either receive unconditional love or loyalty, or alter our judgement until it prohibits impartiality.

Whether it be matters of faith, religion, sporting clubs we all follow, we all have different influences that come into play and affect our perception.

Thanks everyone.

You make a good point, CP. One that I (and perhaps all of us) should take on board.

I do, however, disagree with you about bias. I'm not biased ;)

Well summarised and written R&B, and spot on CP.

Good read R&B O:)
You made me laugh and you made me think...lol.

I just love this place - have since the day I discovered it.
It has everything an online 'community' could ask for - and the best websites of interacting people that I've ever been a part of.

Thumbs up all round from me :-bd

Good read R&B, some of those things you mention I would have thought that only I or a select few do.

Have spent probably way too much time on the forums, but the constant posts and different topics makes SAFooty a great online community. Wish I had have known about the site before October last year.

I was constantly looking at Country Footy & Sporting Pulse all last season, but I love to talk footy and not just read results. Really looking forward to talking Footy when it gets going.

On face value, yes, it seems we are a whinging bunch of....

However, the 'shits' thread was started much earlier than the 'rate' thread, so I calculated the posts-per-day (PPD) for each thread.

The 'shits' thread on average has received 4.91 PPD, whereas the 'rate' thread receives 4.33 PPD. Comparatively, it's not a huge difference and roughly equates to 1 more post every couple of days.

Interesting comparison there Quichey, When I began reading this thread I was thinking the Sh1ts thread started well before the rate thread. Glad someone else did the research.....

Great read R&B :D

The shits thread was one of the first started and has been been at the top of the page since 2005. That's a bloody long time

You may be a bit of a pendant when it comes to grammar but not spelling ;) 8)

Thanks FC and A Mum ;) :D

I'm grateful that you've given me the opportunity to list my favourites again.

Yes, it's LOSE, not LOOSE!!!!!!

There is only an apostrophe in 'ITS' when it's short for 'IT IS'.

There is no apostrophe in its at any other time!!!!

Plurals don't bloody well have apostrophes, as in plural's!!! Aaaaargh!!!!

It's 'I SHOULD HAVE', not 'I SHOULD OF'!!!!

Three other things:

1 I make plenty of grammatical mistakes as well.

2 This post has more exclamation marks than any other post I've made.

3 I didn't care how many posts had been made on the Rate and Shits threads. Poetic licence only :D

Oh, by the way, FC, I gave Mrs redandblack a lovely Citrine pendant for her birthday, but I didn't know I was a grammatical pendant :D ;)

A fantastic read.
Self-moderating is the best thing about this website and trolls get shot down... (even though I have been known to stir people just for a reaction  )

I rate thie website highly as having discussions with real people (or are you.. who knows...) about real issues is alot better than sitting on facebook reading pointless garbage...
