Metro West Rules and Regs

Heard a story today of a Metro West U12 team who had their score WIPED on the weekend and missed out on a Grand Final after a head count.

WTF? We don't even do this in senior footy anymore so I'm a bit bemused as to why a junior league, which is supposed to be all about "participation" still has this rule.

MWJFL use the AFL laws:

5.5.3 Players exceeding Permitted Number
Where a Team has more than the permitted number of Players on the Playing Surface, the following shall apply:
(a) a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick to the captain or acting captain of the opposing Team, which shall be
taken at the Centre Circle or where play was stopped, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team;
(b) a Fifty-Metre Penalty shall then be imposed from the position where the Free Kick was awarded; and
(c) the Team shall lose all points which it has scored in the Match up to the time of the count.

so it would depend on what part of the game it happened

stupid.

So poor suffering coach, who has 25 kids jumping up and down shouting "pick me, pick me" and kid who doesn't listen ends up on ground because he's a little shit and not for the evil plan of the coach gets screwed?

I admire every junior coach
Not for managing 25 little maniacs, but the +/- 50 parents attached to them

Some might say the karma bus hit Flinders Pk right between the eyes, after they deliberately played 19, sometimes 20 kids against our lads

Different grade but same club. Having said that, I dont like seeing it happen to anyone if its a mistake, which I believe it was.

What do you mean you don't do it in senior footy anymore? Still happens in the HFL

It does happen in senior footy, i was involved in a final game this year where the opposition called a head count but got it wrong.

Barossa District lost on head count to Willaston about 3 years ago in the A Grade 1st Semi Final in the BLG

Willaston called a count at the start of the last quarter and I think Barossa's playing coach hadn't quite left the field yet. Barossa score wiped, Willaston won the match then beat Gawler Central by a point in the prelim then got flogged by Tanunda in the GF

Completely agree. The parents care more than the kids and the coaches!
Not saying that they don't care but boy junior parents really think junior footy is the AFL!

They called a player count but given the scoreline it wasn't much of a deterrence. All it did was waste time

that would have been the 16 white comp during the year then?
wouldn't go comparing these instances of player counting with what happened in the prelim final for the 14 blues.

Last night on the "Rush Hour" with Ricciuto and Dittmar, a gentleman phoned in about an U13 match, Mitcham Vs Plympton, where a count was called 30 seconds into the 3rd qtr, Mitcham who were in front were found to have one too many on the field and had their points wiped. All of this was alleged by this caller so forgive me if these facts are incorrect, by if anyone does know can they please explain why it had to come to this?

Because they are the rules mate. If you suspect that the other team has more than 18 players on the field (or 17 if one player has been sent off etc) then the captain can ask the umpire for a player count. The game is stopped, the two teams line up and the umpire counts the number of player in each team. If there are too many players on the field, the offending team's score is wiped at the time of the count. If there is not too many players and the count was wrongly called for, a free kick is awarded in the centre of the ground plus a 50m penalty.

Why it happened in an under 13's game is another question, but if they are playing for premiership points then fair enough, the kids have to learn the tough consequences of errors at some stage.
