Not saying any of you are planning this but if anyone is thinking of a trip to Darwin between Oct and March and either wants a training run or even a game come join the NTFLUA.

Trust me, it'll be an experience you'll never forget.

Hydration anyone?

My lad has now been doing some SFL u15 games, he has found it weird umpiring kids he goes to school with but has had some excellent feedback, Im trying to push him into taking it seriously and follow a pathway but he is hesitant as he still enjoys playing.

If he was still here he could have umpired with the great am Bays!!! :lol:

Lightning McQueen wrote:After umpiring probably the toughest A Grade game I've ever umpired on the weekend I was kind of looking forward to an easy last minor round game to finish off the season with (as I'll withdraw my availability for the finals), yeah I got an easy A Grade game but they've chucked in an under 17 match too.
This will mean I'll have one game from 11:30 to 1 then another from 2:45 to 5, I was meant to take my daughter for a driving lesson too as she was going to drive me to the game, I just hope the calves and hammies don't seize up in between.
Looking forward to checking my bets when I finish though, I cleaned up last week only betting on the last at each meeting as there have been some crazy results.

Got through both games unscathed, the A grade game was decided as the last kick of the day sailed through the goals.

Got a semi final this week apparently, wasn't too fazed either way, was expecting the younger ones to get all the finals, they train religiously and chuck a part of their payments into an end of season trip that they all go on.

they've gotta be careful what they get up to, there's always a whistle blower amongst them.

They started a drinking game but the boundary umps threw it in...

If it’s close do they call for a score review?

Nope, just get told to "play on"

Can an umpire explain to me if a field umpire can over ride a goal umpires decision? This wasn't a touched off the boot scenario, just a disagreement on which side of the post the ball went. Goal umpire signalled it a goal and then got overturned by field umpire.

I’ve seen that occur in A, B, C grades and under16’s this season

Saw it in a Div 1 reserves game last week

Yes they can, having said that, they shouldn't have to, as the goal umpire should not have signalled anything without first receiving the all clear from the field umpire.

The field umpire is actually the one who decides if its a goal.

When giving the all clear, the field umpire will put 2 hands up, 1 hand up, or none.

2 = goal.
1 = point
0 = I don't know, your call goal umpire.

Goal umpires are simply glorified signal men/women, who provide back up for when the field umpire didn't have a good view.

Ahhh No, well not exactly. ;)

Law 8 outlines the responsibilities of the umpires.
The role of the field umpires and boundary umpires (with respect to the behind post) is to assist the goal umpire to adjudicate if it is a behind or a goal. The goal umpires have final say on if the ball is wholly over the line and or if it a goal/behind.

When field umpires are putting up their hands as you described it is to indicate what we think the score is, to assist them. If the goal umpire disagrees he has final say.

However the practice is in that case is that the field umpire would call time off and then have a conversation with the goal umpire to determine what the final decision is, I.e "Are you sure, I think it is this......" if the goal umpire is adamant it is a goal or a behind then that is the decision.

In the case described by Dutchy, I hope the above occurred, i.e. the Field umpire has respected the goal umpire and gone in to have a conversation and they have negotiated the correct score outcome - in that case "the Flag" has gone with what the "Fieldy" thinks.

Well clearly I have NFI! haha

Perhaps I'm used to league appointed field umpires not trusting club appointed goal umpires!

Yep this above was my understanding.

Firstly this was a finals match so goal umpires were SFL appointed so no issues there.

Our lad kicked the ball from about 25m out straight in front very high and the goal umpire hardly moved from his spot in the centre of the goals and signalled a goal, the boundary umpires had the ball and were running it back to the centre but one of the field umpires came in and had a long discussion with the goal ump who then seemed reluctant to change his decision to a point. The opposition never complained about the goal either.

It was at a critical time of the game in a low scoring affair and pretty frustrating, I was going to ask the umps post game but we ended up getting over the line despite this so let it go.

Im guessing the field umpire must have been absolutely adamant it was a point and over ruled the goal ump.

Yep, in that situation I am generally more assertive in my "assistance" to goal umpires.

Certainly on a Sunday in the SFL I was more inclined to give the goal umpires some "divine intervention"... ;)

However when over-ruling a league appointed umpire from my perspective you want to make sure you are in bloody good position and 100% certain of the score.
