Salisbury and Port Adelaide By Elections

Postby Sojourner » Fri Sep 09, 2011 7:09 pm

I hear around the traps that the State Liberals dont want to contest either seat at the by elections created by Rann and Foley leaving, any truth in it?

Could be an interesting strategic move if its true, both are safe ALP seats, so the Liberals are clearly not going to win them, - but if parties like the Greens, D4D, Family First and various Independents contest the seat and all preference their votes to D4D or a popular independent candidate then it could go that way. Some of the independents that have won seats in recent times have proved more than a little difficult to shift out, especially based around theirs and other preference flows.

Parties tend not to contest seats they are unlikely to win.
They save the campaign funds to spend on seats they may win.

Interesting, has been announced that Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson is going to contest Foley's seat as an independent, if the Greens and Family First both preference him over the ALP, he would have to be a chance of winning it!

The Mayor is highly unlikely to to get up ... not the sharpest tack in the box I'd suggest.
