Tasmania Election

Interesting result from Tasmania, most likely Labor will form a goverment with the support of the Greens who will clearly then be able to dominate the Tasmanian Parliment, I am not sure if the Greens have ever been in that position in any other state before, yet it will be interesting to see what kind of a job they do make of it.


"Tasmania is headed for a hung Parliament, with the latest seat predictions saying 10 Labor, 10 Liberal and five to the Greens.

With almost 80 per cent of the vote counted, the swing against David Bartlett's Labor Government is about 12 per cent."

Didn't the ACT Govt have to form an alliance with the Greens last year?

Also, the WA Parliament was hung IIRC and a $750m promise of mining royalties to the regions got them into Govt?

IIRC the NT Govt also relies on 1 or possibly 2 independents.

If the Parliament is hung in Tassie, it can't last a full term surely given all the issues down there with Gunns. And after both parties came out and said they wouldn't align with the Greens, would an alliance be breaking a core promise for both parties, straight away?

What I find almost laughable about the Tasmanian election is that the Liberals are claiming a victory when they can only win at most 10 out of 25 seats against a government that was clearly on the nose after 12 years in power.

If that is all they can do then how are they going to get on when things get tough?

It is a terribly hung parliament with little prospect of a stable government ... another election within the next 12-18 months looms large.

I think the Liberals are claiming victory because they had a larger proportion of the primary vote, and Bartlett said he wouldn't negotiate with the Greens for a minority government. I agree that we'll be off to the polls before too long though.

Yes you are correct, there was an apparent pact (between Labor and the Libs) in the case of no party gaining a majority, that the party with the most seats, or in the case of a tie, the party with the most votes would be free to form a minority government.

Whilst true, my point was really about the Libs popping champagne corks when in fact they should have polled a lot better in the circumstances.
