ENVIRONMENT Minister Jay Weatherill has announced he will challenge Deputy Premier Kevin Foley for his job in the wake of Labor's narrow election victory.
Mr Weatherill, who has been considered a future Premier, said he had notifed both Mr Rann and Mr Foley of his intention.

"It is time for a new approach," he told AdelaideNow.

"We have been given a very clear message from the community and we have to heed that message.

"Part of that is the way in which we have been governing and that is something I think I can help the Government with.

"That is why I am seeking the deputy's role to support Mike Rann."

It is understood Mr Weatherill telephoned both Mr Rann and Mr Foley about his move.

The Labor Caucus will not meet for several weeks to appoint a new front bench and reappoint Premier Mike Rann because all MPs have a vote, and several seats in the Lower House and the numbers in the Upper House will not be finalised for several weeks.

Hardly a bad move on behalf of Jay Weatherill, he clearly sees himself in the top job at some stage and with Jane Lomax Smith no longer in competition he might just as well strike whilst the iron is hot and go for it via the Deputy Job, if its as suggested last night and Rann does not lead the party to the next election then the role of the deputy becomes fairly significant. As he says, in view of the swings against Labor they clearly have to be seen to be doing something and likely will be making a re grouping of their ministers so he might as well go for it and see what the public think.

Jay lives about 200m from me and I see him regularly out "on the beat". Nice bloke who appears to have much to offer. Sadly he is a politician and therefore untrustworthy. Nice bloke though.

Answer could be yes, pacified with A-G job but the leader of the Left (Conlon) is unlikely to be pleased about that.
Could get the Deputy Leadership and become Treasurer.
Could get the Deputy Leadership and become A-G as well, leaving the sweetener for Conlon to become Treasurer.

I think he's busy negotiating a spot for Kouts that is completely benign in terms of being a world away from his driving issues. ie he wont get Police, Road Safety (again!) etc. Wonder if he might get the vacant water portfolio?

Reading the paper today, Labor have not listened to the people nor learnt a thing

In the week before the election, Foley told Leon Byner that he wasn't interested in the Premier's job - why be Deputy Premier then? Why not begin preparing for the changeover which they all know will eventually happen?

If they keep with Rann and Foley; has anything changed?

At least Atkinson has listened and done the right thing.....
