amBays and mick, refer to topsy's correct post.

Lib-NP 72

ALP 72

WA Nat 1

Green 1

Independents 4

Whatever the result, judging the performances of Gillard and Abbott since the election, it's obvious which one acts like a Prime Minister ;)

Final count even allowing for the WA Nat member sitting on the cross benches LNP 73, ALP 72 Greens 1 and Ind 4.

Obviously counting will continue in the seats until polls are declared.

Hmm what will the next week bring in terms of who will form the minority government, with the support of the independants?

The WA Nat has said he will not support the mining tax, so unless the ALP drops it I think he'll support a minority Liberal government. All northern independents come from conservative electorates, I suggest that if they support the ALP, their parliamentary careers will only last to the next election. Self interest is a powerful motivator  but apparently Katter is comtemplating retirement after this term, so he could do anything or support anybody.

Here's the latest I've found.
The swings seem to be going one way then the other: http://au.news.yahoo.com/election/a/-/e ... -73-seats/
The coalition is on track to win 73 lower house seats, one more than Labor, in the new parliament as vote counting continues on Friday.
The Liberals have extended their advantage in Brisbane, the only seat regarded as still in doubt nearly a week after the federal election.
The former Liberal MP Therese Gambaro leads sitting Labor MP Arch Bevis by 839 votes with more than 81 per cent of the vote counted.
The trend is away from Labor with fewer than 8000 votes yet to be counted.

aB, no need for those emoticons when you make a statement that he will sit on the cross-benches, but you still count him in the Lib-NP tally :?

He has stated that he should NOT be counted in the Lib-NP tally.

mick, that's irrelevant.

However, the Green has stated outright that he will support the ALP.

Applying your logic, that makes it:

ALP 73
Lib-NP 72
WA Nat 1
Ind's 4 ;)

Why?

I think a bigger 'fly' might be that Tony's costings were done on the back of an envelope and they lost the envelope and hoped nobody would notice ;)

He went on to point out in an interview I saw that this was only a promised rescue package for the immediate situation, and that he supported the idea that the Tasmanian timber industry should move to logging only plantation timber, with the occasional exception for timber for specific needs - I think he said "single logs" in that context.

Yes, and not a Green Light for logging old growth..
He is also linking up with Nick Xenophon to fight the poker machines!
He suggested the states are addicted to gambling revenue, but that revenue actually generates other costs through welfare needs to the state that create a net revenue loss - it sounds plausible to me.
I think I like having lots of independents around instead of every pollie toeing some party line. 8)

Anything to limit or get rid of pokies is good. As you suggest some good may come out of this mess through the independents I'm concerned no matter who gets in may result in ill conceived policy on the run much like we have had for the last 2 1/2 years as the minority government tries to keep the independents on side.

Now that the numbers are pretty much finalised and each side can more or less rely on 73 seats( ;) ), it will come down to the independent's choice, as we all knew.

Will they look to the national interest, or their own interests?

Either way, nobody won the election and perhaps a lot of good will come out of this situation, whatever they do.

Parliamentary reform, for one thing, is well overdue, as is campaign funding, truth in political advertising, etc.

PS: Well done, Psyber, most posters I read (not on this intelligent forum) write 'tow the line', so I thank you for your correct use. (yes, I know I'm pedantic).

WorkChoices wasn't ill conceived?

Of course it was ill-conceived but not policy on the run.

I can't see how either Party can form minority Government. Both the Libs and ALP showed during the election campaign they hate minorities. ;)

Sorry LL would love to reply in full to this obviously erroneous statement but the Adelaide Hills regions have just been overrun by a swarm of illegal dusky skinned queue jumpers demanding sunbeds and 3D plasma screens.
