This the highest taxing government for one reason wages have increased with inflation and the growth in the economy.....

Average salary in 1996 was $30 000 tax rate 42c in the $ tax paid $12 200 (approx) (source ATO)

Average salary 2006, $60 000 tax rate = 30 c in the $ tax paid $18 000 (aprox) (source careerone)

Stand to reason this govt is collecting more tax, I bet it is also the highest spending government on health, education and the environment in this country's history for the same reasons.....

It is a natural phenomena that as economies grow and the fact inflation exists governments, particularly those who remain in power for a long time are going to have greater incomes (tax) and expenditure.....

Howard has had higher tax revenue than HAwke/keating they were higher than Fraser, he was higher than Whitlam, Whitlam greater than Menzies, Menzies greater than Curtin......

Mick, the point you brought up is the very reason why the ALP have to be focussed - and keep things simple as well. And the guilt factor has to be brought forth. Show these people who only think of themselves just what their self centred voting is doing to the social fabric of Australian society. It's important - and the key card that has to be played is the cultural animosity that exists between WASP's (if I can use that acronym) and the Lebanese as an exmple - or the Muslims. Pauline Hanson is in fact playing into the ALP's hands by bringing that very issue back into the spotlight. The ALP just need to use it right - to show what has become of our country socially. Speaking personally - it makes me sick to my stomach the lack of tolerance going on in this country.

You're a dreamer.

Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign was run and won according to this political truism:

"It's the economy, stupid."

You certainly do love a long winded debate Phill. Hence the reason I declined to participate.

My politics are mine, my views when expressed display the colour and nature of my allegiance. Not a problem, always been the case.

I could not convince you, nor you me, so would be a waste of time and energy. Just dont cry foul when you are overwhelmed. Just stop posting on the subject. Admit I will enjoy reading this, similar to the last long winded thread. Well for a while anyway! Sort of like Neighbours, miss two or three episodes, but you soon catch up.

Had to laugh this morning. Peter "where's my numbers gone" Costello was on ABC local radio explaining that HECS fees weren't that high. Well they certainly weren't for him! :P
