At one stage, I think, standard guage was "standard" only in NSW and VIC. and there was a lot of Qld on narrow guage. The other states liked broad guage because it reduced sway and was more comfortable for passengers. I seem to recall that it was broad guage to Broken Hill, narrow guage to Silverton, and standard guage on to Sydney when we did that trip when I was a child.
So, agreement kept being far away. It does make sense to have one guage throughout the whole country.
