With the standard gauge we can run freight all over Australia. Victoria lost a fair few lines under Kennett and we are slowly getting these railways back. South Australia and Victoria should have went Standard gauge years ago but never did.

At one stage, I think, standard guage was "standard" only in NSW and VIC. and there was a lot of Qld on narrow guage. The other states liked broad guage because it reduced sway and was more comfortable for passengers. I seem to recall that it was broad guage to Broken Hill, narrow guage to Silverton, and standard guage on to Sydney when we did that trip when I was a child.

So, agreement kept being far away. It does make sense to have one guage throughout the whole country.

On that basis there seems to be a case for standardisation on "standard". My, obviously a little vague, memories were from my childhood when my father worked for the SA Railways.

My father was a Fitter's Assistant at Islington, and when he got severe asthma they gave him a Clerical Assistant job in the pay office. He had and amazing skill for adding up money so it suited him.

One of my memories from childhood when I was about 5, because he arranged it, was I got to travel between Broken Hill and Silverton in the cab with the driver and watch the Emus running with the train.
