Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

I say anyone who is sending their kids to a private school with higher tuition fees shouldn't be getting tax payers money to subsidise that when there are plenty of public schools their kids can attend. That is where the extra money the libs are prepared to spend here should be going.

To be fair WYCB, private school parents can also claim Labor's school uniform rebate. The key is, what is eligible? I assume this is another means test activity. This was published in the Coalition media announcement.

LABOR’S REBATE
Can claim 50% rebate for up to $780 per primary school child (= $390)
Can claim 50% rebate for up to $1558 per secondary school child (= $779)
Total for family with one primary school student and one secondary school student: $1169

THE COALITION REBATE
Can claim 50% rebate for up to $1000 per primary school child (= $500)
Can claim 50% rebate for up to $2000 per secondary school child
(= $1000)
Total for family with one primary school student and one secondary school student: $1500

Labor’s Eligible Expenses

Laptops
Home computers and associated costs
Home internet connection
Printers
Education software
School text books
School stationary
Uniforms

Coalition’s Eligible Expenses

Laptops
Home computers and associated costs
Home internet connection
Printers
Education software
School text books
School stationery
Uniforms
Government and non-government school fees
Special education costs for children with disabilities, like dyslexia
Camps and excursions
Extra-curricular school activities, such as music, sports, dance and drama lessons
Tutoring costs
Musical instruments
Sporting fees & equipment
School photos

I am not a fan of the uniforms part of Labor's policy either squawk but the expansion that has occured with the liberal party's policy is ridiculous. To be including sporting fees and the like is poor but i do like the expansion to special education costs.

It's only the Musical Instruments bit that I see as a risk.
People like me might be tempted to buy their kid a Guarnerius, if not a Stradivarius, to learn Violin on if it were tax deductible. ;)

Hehe, brilliant idea Psyber. Except I'd forego the violin and buy my kid this to shred with:

He'd probably have trouble prying it from my hands though

Looks like Labor might be getting a massive swing towards them in Kingston. Also shows what I expected - women are deserting Abbott in droves.

The reason I'd go with the Violin is the resale market, some years later when it has been off the deduction book for a while.
I did well on a smaller scale buying my wife a [non-deductible] early 20th century Paul Baily violin [French], which has appreciated nicely over the 20 years since.
I'll probably take it to the UK with me when I go and auction it over there where the market for such things is stronger.

Apparantly not - Port neither. Although I'm sure if you went to the bookies with money in hand they'd be happy to take it on South or Port at pretty well whatever odds you name.

I had a mate, who obviously doesn't have a great idea about this sort of stuff, tell me that he was so unimpressed with Gillard & Abbott, that he was voting for the Greens!

Quick politics lesson later, and he's ruled out Liberal, Labour, Nationals, and Greens, and now he really has to think!!!

There is a school of thought that a major shift of votes toward the Greens could actually have the effect of centralising the future policies of the major parties looking to draw swinging voters at future elections.

I'd vote for Humphrey B Bear if I could instead of the turkeys on offer ... what a choice from Dumb and Dumber.

Democracy, Aussie style ... compulsory voting to protect your rights, it's all for your own good.

Don't you love it?

The current politicians just reflect what the public want.

Boring, safe, populist, etc.

Any politician who raises his or her head above the parapet doesn't last long.

People should blame themselves just as much as the politicians.

Yes, very true R&B ... sad, but true.

When so called border protection becomes a major election issue and we expect our leaders to lie their pants off, you know it makes sense, we're screwed.
