Gillard backs Internet filter

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

The NAZIS called themselves a National Workers' Socialist Party, so there was a double whammy in the title.
I'm not sure whether it was always just spin as Gozu suggests, or whether it started out genuinely meant and perverted itself, as did the Communist movement in Russia.
Anyway, I'm now waiting for Julia to announce that, as some elements of the East Timor government won't agree to the plan, they'll have to reluctantly use the facility on Nauru, which by coincidence has recently been upgraded and made nice.. ;)

Oh, and, of course, any government would like to be able to filter the Internet.. and all the other media.
[Or at least have it in the hands of a few "friends" they can persuade to do it for them.]

Anyone with any grip on the reality of the problem would be crazy to just let it all flow with no considerations to our normal requirements of visa screening and security checks let alone the nature/motivation of the whole process
Rudd had a hopeless grip on the situation, that was better for Australia?
It might all unravel for her still if the East Timorese say no but at least she is preparerd to face up to the situation, not hide behind moral smugness amd hopeless public policy outcomes.

It shouldn't even be an election issue. It shouldn't even be an issue. It pales in significance to other problems we face.

East Timor will come to the party, after all, we did assist in setting up the Reinado assassination ;)

But it obviously is for a significant (election winning) fraction of the population. Fortunately in a democracy these people are allowed to have their say and they influence policies of the major parties....time to get over it.

Today's word, boys and girls, is 'consultation'.

You'd think after the mining tax fiasco they would've learned, I don't know, something?

Genuinely staggered by this government's breathtaking arrogance and incompetence...

Is the Internet Filter Australia's Berlin Wall

The reason that such large scale political and ideological change can take place, I believe, is in large part to the robust and open democracy which Australia’s political leaders have built over the last hundred years. Fundamental to this has been the freedom of political thought and expression – backed up by rigorous, independent (and in many instances, judicious) review of government decisions.

The internet filter proposed by Senator Stephen Conroy threatens all this. Thus far, the government have focused their arguments around the highly emotive issue of child pornography. There is no question that access to this sort of material should be prohibited. However, only 32% of the sites listed on the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s “blacklist” are related to child pornography. This means that a whopping 68% of sites on the list are there for other reasons – political, ideological, etc – and at the whim of the government in power at the time.

Moreover, the blacklist is NOT available for public scrutiny or independent review. A copy of the blacklist was released on the Wikileaks website earlier in 2009 (a site which is, itself, blacklisted).

Scary stuff.....particularly when we have a government that (on the surface at least) abandons its principles and is prepared to say or do anything to retain power.

The real scary part of it all is that it wouldn't matter who was in power, they would both look to introduce this dictatorial measure.

The ALP I grew up with liked to suggest they had a mortgage on morality.....easy they hadn't been in government for 23 years, what are we faced with today:

The ALP thinks asylum seekers should have a fair go......too gutless to say it because of electoral backlash
The ALP apologises to aborigines but does it in the first months of office so it doesn't impact on their electoral chances
The ALP says "climate change is the greatest moral dilemma" then drops it and comes up with some half arsed measures
The ALP thinks we need an internet filter to protect the kiddies..... then drops it because there are more computer nerds than kiddies and kiddies don't vote.

Gozu descibed the Liberal party as odious .... pot calling the kettle black...... I'd rather vote for the odious because what you see is what you get.
