Keating Making His Move

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

No hope with this crop ... I can't see a decent future PM out of the ranks of either side at the minute ... although I'd have Turnbill over Abbott any day.

There is SFA on the Labor side though.

Shorten might be half decent as a PM, but I'd expect the Libs to win the next 2 or 3 elections.

A week is a long time in politics, they say.

Predicting the next three elections is bravely optimistic, GWW :)

Dig a bit deeper on both sides, dedja.

Keep an eye on Jason Clare down the track.

Shorten would say that to anyone willing to listen.

The only decent future PM on either side is Mark Butler.

I've been a Republican ever since Bob Menzies tried to call our decimal coinage the "Royal" when it was about to be introduced.
I used to remain seated for "God Save the Queen".

However, I just couldn't vote for the only model offered in the Referendum.
It offered only a stooge/party hack as a President who would never rock the boat.

I think Paul did want the the title, even if it was a token position, as a cipher to the major parties, without anything but a ceremonial role.

We can't stand on our own, Psyber.

We need our Head of State to be the Queen of a foreign country ;)

It was a better option than the alternative offered to us.

no matter how you dress it up, the people spoke, & now the politicians are not willing to offer a President style option for fear of, somehow, losing some of their own power.

If anyone needs to look at themselves, it should be Hawke who appointed Hayden

All ex-politicians should be banned from consideration - I reckon it would sail through then

My point is, it can be used as a political favour as was done with Hayden

So better to have a foreign HOS than one elected by having to have both sides of politics agreeing?

Reflect on that if you arrive in the country of our HOS and line up in the 'aliens' queue.

Not the first politician to be appointed GG by his own side, of course.

I wonder how many would put forward Paul Keating as President? I suspect that because the political parties have the money and branch memberships in place, that they would soon dominate the process and have their candidates through to the job, without endorsement from one of the two major parties, any candidate is going to struggle against the person they do endorse and the rusted on 30% that habitually vote Labor or Liberal will simply vote for whoever they are told too.

Once Abbott moves on or gets moved on I think the Liberal Party will have some major issues in anointing a new leader. Like the ALP they have their factions also with other political processes involved, the issue of being Republican or Monarchist for one. I cant see an incoming leader being a Republican whilst the Liberals are in opposition, more likely they would choose a republican if an existing PM retired. My reasoning for this is that the Monarchists largely have the numbers and their current interest is winning government those other issues will likely come later.

Keep your eye on a back bencher called "Andrew Laming", very popular with the young Liberal movement and just slowly beginning to gather steam and saying the right things to the right people as he goes. Much like Howard all over again.

Well, a majority of the people in a majority of states decided that, whether Keating or you like it or not.

I am all for our own HOS but not on any terms

Hayden is in the memory of most people of voting age
Hasluck was the previous "political" appointment but most people would never have heard of him
However, some would say Kerr was a political appointment (that worked well)

They both would do it hence my position that it is decided like a referendum so he or she represents all states and people
