Why is she a racist Borat?
In all the media hysteria, & their rush to condemn her, I could never actually work out what this lady was guilty of saying.

I don't think our country should bend over backwards for muslims, asians, europeans or anyone- does that make me racist?

Pauline Hanson's One Nation party had a large number of members elected to the Queensland parliament when she started.

They turned out to be the biggest bunch of no-hopers ever seen and were voted out at the first opportunity.

This new candidature is all about money.

irrelevant Borat, I'm (at minimum) a 3rd generation Australian, & my loyalties lay with Australia, so I'm not sure what your point is?
I also embrace the culture of Australia.

To expand a little further on my original post: part of Hanson's first platform was our own Aboriginal problem. As a nation we were trying to make amends to those people by simply throwing money at them, meanwhile they freely took the handouts, and learnt to do little for themselves, thus they became more dependant on the system we created and required greater handouts, and the cycle continued. Hanson believed in breaking this cycle, and rightly or wrongly she basically told the Aboriginals to try harder, get a job etc. Sometimes she was quite firm in stating this and actually said it to Aborigines face to face on camera.
I cannot remember too much more about her really early days, but I thought she had a fair point at the time. She was a bit rough around the edges but softly spoken people don't get heard usually. If you want to be heard in politics you need to get people's attention, and she sure succeeded.
What ruined her has been said already on this thread; media, politics, trumped up charges and I mentioned her own stupidity. As an example of the stupidity/politics combination, she began to identify with the blatant racists that were rallying to her in force, no one else was saying such gutsy stuff at the time and they loved it, so she expanded her platform to include them, and at the same time lost everybody that had some belief in what she originally was saying. Finally she was left with the racist group, the racist tag and I was embarrassed to have ever put in any good word for her, as were many others.
If I am out on anything here please correct me. But I think it was an important moment in Australian politics, and said a lot about what we are as a nation. If we are going to remember it, I think we should remember it right.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

While personally I think she is a racist and as such i dislike her immensely, she has no spot in politics.

Occasionally when journo's get bored they ask her a question re economic policy.

She has less than basic kingergarten school yard grasp on these things, i can't remember the quote so i wont post it, but a few years back she made some suggestion on how to fix the Australian economy, which was so completely wrong and unworkable that i was laughing for weeks.

The lady is a moron.

I do have to disagree with you here Borat. She fills a very important niche in politics: that of the demagogue. Somebody who stirs the pot, brings issues to the fore where they can be debated. Not only does she (perhaps unwittingly) fill this niche, but she does it with a lot of colour. The democratic system as we know it requires people like Ms. Hanson in order to function properly.

Having said that, yeah, she's a moron. The economic policy you refer to was to solve the nation's debt simply by printing more money, IIRC. See, not only does she stir the pot, but she adds a lot of comic relief!

She couldn't be further from the truth there, I can tell you victims of the Stolen Generation still have not received one cent for having the government take them away from their roots and lives as well as throwing the rest of their lives into upheaval due to various issues that arose from the government doing so.
Ive worked for government in various social services for 18 years and I can tell you that aboriginals do not get any extra help, if anything they're disadvantaged as they're so intimidated by the whole set up and miss out on stuff they are eligible for.
This sort of crap that she sprouts really shits me off (and being of aboriginal descent and having my father as one of the stolen generation I feel I can talk on this issue).
There's hippies marching the streets to get a terrorist released from gaol but where were they when there were tens of thouands aboriginals imprisoned just for the sake of their skin? Smoking dope and doing jack shit.

Does this mean we are going to print more money to stimulate the economy?
I'm still waiting to overrun by the four hundred million malaysians that were coming here in 1996  .
It's bad enough that it takes me twice as long to get anywhere these days as the traffic is so thick because of all the Aboriginals driving in their cars that the government gave them for nothing. :?
I won't cope that.

The person is a cretin. And she doesn't speak for the majority of Australians. She speaks for a few disenchanted reactionary rednecks.

Good posts, Wedgie and LL. I was beginning to think you had to be a total redneck if you supported the Roosters, so I'm reassured.

I don't think anyone is trying to get a 'terrorist' released from goal, though. Perhaps it might be a protest against the smashing of the basic principle of justice, that someone is innocent until proven guilty and not gaoled for 5 years without a trial. This is a principle democratic countries fight for. If Hicks is found guilty by a proper court of law, he deserves whatever sentence he gets.
