Yep. Hockey will work much better with the Greens holding balance of power in the Upper House than Gillard :?

The Independents don't want to rush forward the next election because they'll likely lose their balance of power. I'd assume they would want this the status quo to continue as long as possible. With the Greens controlling the Senate soon there shouldn't be any issues with supply thanks to this Greens-Labor alliance.

So I don't think we'll be back to the polls any earlier than if Labor had won a majority in their own right.

Anyone else read the situation that way?

In terms of who may or may not have a mandate this is the current 2 party preferred vote with 88% counted as per the AEC web-site:

House of Representatives National Two Party Preferred Result Coalition Votes Percentage % Swing %
Australian Labor Party 5,836,300 50.00 -2.70
Liberal/National Coalition 5,837,432 50.00 +2.70

50.00 - 50.00 ! 1132 more people prefered the coalition out of 11.6 million. Intertesting to see where that count ends up.

Dont know about earlier but your points are valid Hondo.
I just heard Peter Beattie speak and he said his leadership was stronger when he had a minority government as every person in his party knew they had to toe the line and provide stability to keep government, the same might happen here.

In retrospect a minority government without Catter is probably about the best result any of us could have hoped for!

Our parliament system was designed for candidates to represent their electorates not a party so if anything things might be a bit more like they're designed for now.
As I said before, interesting times. Hopefully it doesn't have a downward impact on our economy because we're seen as unstable when the opposite might occur.

Exactly. A minority Labor government will work much smoother with a Greens contolled senate than a minority Liberal Government. Blind Freddie could see that...but apparently Bob Katter couldn't. ;)

Hondo, I think that figure should be disregarded until the AEC include the seats they've currently excluded. These will favour Labor and I'd strongly suspect the ALP will win the 2PP.

Whatever side of politics you support, this has been an exhausting process. Commiserations to the LibNP supporters on here; it's been nerve-wracking for both sides.

As Wedgie said, a result where Labor form government, but Katter supports Tony Abbott, is OK by me, too.

As for my charge of extreme bias by News Ltd, I see I've now been joined by Bob Brown, Malcolm Fraser, Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor and many others who have specifically mentioned it. Murdoch is a disgrace and we can now stand by for The Australian to go berserk.

Stiff shit to that excuse for a newspaper.

I'd guess Minister for Regional Development rather than Speaker?

I wonder how much Premier Rann contributed to the Federal Labor heavies to get support from the Independents.
Eventhough he is OS his mobile may have been red hot.

Stop the boats! See ya Tone.

Death of the National Party? Some Libs are already blaming the Nats for this.

Why do the Coalition continue to lie about having more of the vote?

They know that may not be right, but if you say it often enough, it gets entrenched as 'fact'.
