where do the majority of boats come from?? Indonesia??

why dont we work with the indonesian govt and help them control their waters which will then minimise the boats leaving to australia from that location and that can be done wherever the boats are leaving from. gotta be better to do that then let them get here and lock em up for years on end on taxpayers money.

if it was inhumane under the Howard years - and i am no fan of howard generally - but i like it, bring it back. stop them coming, it doesnt matter how we stop them, just stop them. its for their benefit moreso then ours. because they spend thousands of $$$$$$$$$$$$ so they would be much better investing that into migrating through legal channels or try another country!

Sad.

That has been the excuse for so many of history's injustices and massacres.

What?

So fleeing a country that has been invaded, crossing undetected by foot over several borders of countries who aren't signatories to the refugee convention while trying to feed a wife and kids, isn't helping yourself?

Contrary to popular belief, it isn't easy getting to Indonesia, let alone Australia, and it is in fact dangerous and very difficult. Many die or are imprisoned before they even get to Indonesia.

Funny how people don't seem to give a shit about asylum seekers who arrive by plane, or illegal immigrants who overstay their work visas.

Why not just outsource border protection to the Israelis?

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/brea ... 6241162025

The Israeli parliament has passed tough new legislation targeting illegal immigration, giving authorities powers to detain migrants for up to three years without charge.

Can you find a post that backs up your statement? Commenting on one issue doesn't preclude one from an opinion on another, does it?

You say people don't give a shit about those who arrive other ways. Where has anyone said this?

This is the 'back it up with facts' board, isn't it?

It's the 'no emoticons' board.

My last sentence was a sweeping statement based on the small observation that I hardly ever read a complaint that plane arrivals are greater than maritime arrivals.

I think you will find you have to have a valid visa before you can even board a plan to Australia - is that not very different? People have done the right thing and got a visa.
Now, if they overstay their visa, well - that's a different story and, when caught, face a minimum of 2 years banishment.

Very different scenario

It can be almost impossible and/or dangerous for many asylum seekers to a) apply for exit visas or b) get to an Australian embassy to apply for a visa.

Asylum seekers who arrive by plane generally have come from a country with an Australian embassy with direct international flights into Australia (ie. China). They stay in Australia and apply for asylum at a later date.

Fact is, those who arrive by boat are more likely to be recognised as refugess than those who arrive by plane, yet our focus and demonisation is on boat arrivals.

I will read it later
Not sure about some of that
If they can find a way to travel 13,000 kms to Australia, I think they could find a way to an embassy
I still say the people that come here by plane have a valid visa and so it is different

I might add, and still maintain, ALL of them are not refugees until proven so - a fact that most people continue to deliberately ignore

The sticker: "Say YES to refugees" I agree, once proven as refugees
BIG difference

Even as an Australian, if I left country A without an exit visa, entered country B without a entry visa (ie. smuggled myself across the border avoiding the checkpoint) and then went to an embassy of country C to apply for a visa, I wouldn't get in the door without the exit/entry stamps.

http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2012/05/31/3515475.htm

This program reveals how many of them have made their way to Australia posing as asylum seekers and have persuaded the government to grant them refugee status and residency. Now they ply their lucrative and sometimes lethal trade, whilst living on taxpayers' money.

Bob Carr was appalling on ABC radio this morning
According to him, they've screwed up and granted refugee status to the smugglers because Tony Abbott wont allow the Malaysian processing.
"It is difficult to distinguish these people from real refugees" So I take it they cant distinguish refugees from non-refugees from smugglers from terrorists from war criminals etc etc etc
Oh, and by the way, Malaysia is such a compassionate and friendly place for illegal immigrants according to Carr. They must have put the rattan away for the moment...............
Seriously, are we really allowing these idiots to run this country?
