Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

People have observed fiscally conservative State governments, which will go some way towards negating any perception they may have of monetary madness within Labor.

The Government has had plenty of time to expose Rudd but has hardly landed a punch; he is just as greasy as Howard. And his "me too" style ensures there are not too many stark differences other than IR.

The government seem to have gotten the jump they needed in the last poll, and now they are starting their campaign. This election is far from over and todays attack by Costello seemed to contain the quotable slogans you expect from a good campaign.

I really hate the way the government is sugarcoating these new IR laws.
But it's smart.
One of Labors best vote winners was its opposition to the IR laws and the Workplace Agreements.
The problem is one person is smart, people as a whole are dumb.
I think rudd is a fresh face, so that holds some stead.
But in saying that, the gov will continue pointing it's finger at the nations economy.
I don;t really know if polls are an accurate reflection of public opinion, what's the overall concensus, can we do a poll on here or what?

Do you think the new IR laws are bad? Seems to me that a stack of new jobs are being created, most employees are worried Labor might take them off and the only people who are talking them down are basically only unionists not even on them.

yep, you have to love these ir laws. AWA's were the greatest thing ever invented.
I was put on an awa recently, it stipulated that I work 7.30- 4.00 , mon- fri, that is what my salary is based on. At last count I am working from 7-6 ,mon-fri and still being paid for 7.30- 4.00. I could do what my former workmate did and complain, but as you may have guessed he is no longer with us.....
How the hell can a young couple enter a mortgage with sort of insecurity.

My point exactly.
GWW, have you been blinded by their advertising?
the reality is, the power is completely in the employers hands.
Sure, many jobs being created, but the poeple working them are paid less, with higher demands.
Just like the USA.
Minimum wage will plummett further, coming from someone who earns under 30,000 a year, with a mortgage, and a full time job.

Not at all. Easiest thing in the world to do is quit.

Getting off your arse and finding another job will tell us what sort of person you are.

Work out what's important to you and do something about getting it. Just don't complain about something you aren't prepared to change.

Couldn't agree more, my partner was getting crap and exploited at work, she bided her time and got another job with significantly more money and better conditions. She negotiated a 9 day fortnight at significantly more than full time in her old job. It's worth saying that because of the attitude of her old employer there has been a mass exodus of employees, so much so that they have offered the internal replacement that took my partner's old job a 19% pay increase. It can be done.

Ok, interesting.
I would be intrigued to see how many positive stories compared to how many negative ones are out there.
Now, quitting a job, is NOT easy.
How can you say quitting is easy?
That is in itself a massive lifestyle change.
Moving house is easy.
you just sell the old one and find a new one.
Is it REALLY that simple?
No.
I agree it's good to stay positive and look for better options, but quitting isn't easy.

SS, depends on mind set and circumstance I guess. It was a extremely hard decision to quit my workplace after 16 years, when I started as a 17 year old and worked my up through the ranks to a management position, to throw out my career, and allow my wife to focus on hers. If her job went belly up then we'd have nothing, except the hope that my old company may "find" me something...Luckily it's working out and life's good. I'm sure there are stories re things not being so good, but sometimes luck and fate play a hand...

I totally agree, but often simply the threat to quit can bring a change in attitude particularly if there is a problem with the firm retaining staff. One of my work colleague's partner retired at 55 because his job was boring and management didn't want to know, anyway he's been retired 6 weeks and they want him back, admittedly he is a highly trained instrument technichian and there is a shortage. Don't get me wrong I think if you are young, lack confidence or skills most of the aces are in the boss' hands. I'm no great fan of the IR laws as apolitical conservative they went way too far, ideology replacing common sense, but I still won't be voting for Rudd, I'm old enough enough to remember the last time an inexperienced labour team was elected (Whitlam 1972) it took this country 2 decades to get over the mess those people caused

Correct mick...whilst being younger and not being around for the Labor days, my chat's with my old man, and the way they struggled to get a house have a car, and bring up three kids on a 17% mortgage, makes me shudder....Haven't seen anything remotly close to say that Rudd knows what he's doing yet. Howard and Costello have the runs IMO..
Also as I tell my wife, he has a week looking chin...and for the life of me I can't support a bloke who looks like a pussy !! :? :?

I heard him this morning banging on about his trip to the Kukoda track and now I have read this afternoon that he had a heart operation just like Arnie! He's so brave, our Kev.
