I never get tired of right wingers whingeing about the Greens in parliament and the amount of votes they got, but they never mention the national party. The irony is totally lost on them it seems.

I don't think that's the point.

The point is Gillard categorically stated that there would not be a Carbon Tax (or whatever she wants to call it now) whilst she was in power.

Now it is happening.

I'm not going to resort to insulting other posters to get my point across, but I think that Gillard should be given the flick, someone like Wayne Swan takes over until an election can be organised, and then we let the people decide- it is our country after all.

Now... We mightn't like my opinion, but I have one... ;)

If leaders were replaced every time they told a lie, there would be 20 leaders a year for both parties. Not that I really want to defend Gillard but both major parties are as bad as each other in the truth stakes.

A politition going back on a minor election promise???? NO WAY!

Happens all the time gents, deal with it.

And as for our Troll friend, if every redneck in Australia shared your views we would be stuffed!

Didnt hear too many complaints when Steve Fielding and Mr X had balance of power. Fieldings views are far more radical on the right spectrum than the Greens. Bob Brown is one of the greatest men Australian Politics has ever had. Fact he is hated by the Right and deep down severly disliked by Labor is exactly why they had over 1 million people vote for the Greens in last election. And also note that if they continue 12-14% into next election with the carryover amount of senators they will most likely still have the balance of power for many years to come. :D

You will find when the Carbon Price and the Direct Action policys are held up to the light in comparison, Carbon Pricing>ETS will be the far more sensible option.

What were the eventual reasons given that the Greens could not win a lower house seat in NSW in their state election?

Clearly voters left Labor in droves and the Liberals won by their biggest margin in a number of years. Labor still preferenced the Greens, yet even with preference flows the Greens could not win a seat? Why were all these disgruntled Labor supporters not voting for the Greens in enough numbers for them to win at least one seat?

My mail is that its because people did not want another ALP government elected and realised that a vote for the Greens could bring back an ALP government.

For the same reason the Greens will take far less votes at the next election, people that dont like the ALP will bypass the Greens not wanting them to bring an ALP government back to power.

Really.... Really? Check your facts and try again.

Start with looking up who the MP in the seat of Balmain is?
11% of vote in LC? Bout the norm for Greens in NSW. (<in regards to polling in 10-11)

Now you just look silly dont you?

A good theory, Sojourner, except for one important error which totally invalidates it.

The Greens did win a lower house seat (Balmain) at the election.

I thought it was a fairly central and major election promise by a politician who thought it could swing the election at the time.
That is clearly why she made that promise so specifically so close to the election...

It is a major factor in the economy and so can't be dismissed as "minor" - that is pure spin!

Also the Greens vote in LC went from about 8% in 2003 to 9.1% in 2007 to 11.1% in 2011

Hardly on the slide hey Sojourner ;)

she said it once on a morning tv interview, her 1000th interview in that week. Yes she shouldnt have said it, we all acknowledge that. But whats done is done, she certainly didnt base her election campain on the promise of no carbon tax.

She made that announcement when there were signs she may not win.
It doesn't matter when or where she said it - her aim in saying it was to have an effect on the election outcome.
You don't really think she ever says anything off the cuff and not rehearsed with several advisers do you?

Disagraceful lies. A bit like saying 'refugees threw their kids overboard' so you could win an election, and then afterwards it being revealed it was all lies.

Now now lets not go too far in this debate. No respected Poiltical party would actually do something like that now would they? ;)

Or perhaps "we have to go to war, because they have weapons of mass destruction".

What some forget is that the election result meant whoever was in government had to compromise with the Greens and independents.

When Tony Abbott said on that video that a carbon tax was no big deal, he recanted later by saying 'circumstances had changed'. Our 'media' accepted this without comment.

I think in that instance yes. If you listen to full context of the interview she was put on the spot with a good question that she didnt expect and BAM. Costing her votes ever since. It was a mistake not a lie.

Brown also said its pie in the sky and certainly 'wouldnt happen in his lifetime'. Its pretty easy to take pot shots at a man who dares to be progressive and thinks outside the square.

You seriously went looking for a Bob Carr quote? All he's worried about is his extensive business interests in China, typical of the Labor Right.
