But that's what this is, at the end of the day it's those who oppose re-settling refugees vs those who don't.

Some interesting thoughts from Malcolm Fraser:

Fraser: increase refugee intake, process in Indonesia and Malaysia

Recent debates on asylum seeker problems have revolved around two approaches that are not going to work.

The opposition’s Nauru solution is not going to get people off boats. It is part of the process by which they get to Nauru which many will regard as a stepping stone to come to Australia. Of those who previously did go to Nauru, 70% were resettled in Australia and in New Zealand. Nauru damages people, is not a deterrent and is expensive. The Pacific Solution, which saw asylum seekers detained on Manus Island and Nauru, cost more than $1 billion over five years, or $500,000 per person.

The government’s Malaysian solution is no better. It still requires people to come to Australia by boat; 800 people who come here are going to be sent to Malaysia and then are going to be traded for 4000 proven refugees, 1000 a year for four years. It is a short-term policy because those numbers are finite, at least in terms of what has been said publicly. If the 800 in number are exceeded, what happens to them? If as the government believes, that the number of 800 will not be reached because the policy will be a deterrent, it implies that those who are sent to Malaysia will not get any protections or any of the rights that should be accorded to refugees.

If the main objective is to save lives and to stop people getting on dangerous boats, it is clear that we need to resource the UNHCR offices to increase resettlement and processing in Indonesia and Malaysia, starting with an immediate increase in the number of people Australia resettles from Indonesia.

Fortunately, sanity has prevailed and Gillard will swallow her pride and revert to the coalition policy of off-shore processing on Nauru.

Abbott on ABC radio just now began the interview with the phrase "we want to stop these illegal arrivals..." Luckily as he wasn't being interviewed by one of his shock jock mates the ABC host pulled him up and reminded him that there is no such thing as illegal arrivals if you are seeking refuge.
And this man wants to be Prime Minister....
Pity they didn't stop the boat HIS family came out on.

Regardless of what International treaties may or may not say, I'm inclined to think that anyone who arrives in a country without consent from that country is an "illegal arrival".
I can imagine where I may finish up if I tried to enter any of our neighbouring countries without a proper passport and/or Visa..

Dont let common sense get in the way of "holier than though" left.
Go and live in Europe for a year and see what illegal immigration has done
If they dont go through the proper process, they are illegal - get over it

It is important to stress that the term “asylum seekers” refers to persons, who have applied for asylum, but whose refugee status has not yet been determined.
As distinct from people who apply for refugee status through the proper channels, are granted status, and then allowed to enter the country legally

Julia Gillard and the ALP, now re-opening off shore detention centres and putting back various John Howard initiated laws to stop people smugglers after so vehnemently opposing it. Unable to even write their own policy, having to have a committee to study it and tell them what their policy should be! :D

Guess they will be rushing out to restore Work Choices in the same way to try and save jobs as factories continue to move off shore?

Not a lot else to do when you're a minority government and your main ally  turns out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing :ymsick:
Their strategy was to try to make this issue turn the population against the coalition but it failed

yup we are stopping the boat people yet the Kiwi's, Poms and Yanks still keep coming and staying. Abbott is doing a great job deflecting these people coming into the country yet the others coming in on the plane are more than welcome.

That is so, as they come with a Passport, and Visa depending on their origin, and go through Customs.
If they thus enter with approval then overstay, they should be rounded up and sent home.
However, they may still be a lesser concern in safety terms than those whose ID, and hence true origin, has not been able to be verified.
