Will the Libs take the easy option and make Costello the new leader or will they realise he's not popular with the electorate and perhaps look at Turnbull who's probably more marketable?
I'm a bit of a Costello fan but I must admit I can't see the Libs getting up at the next election with him in charge, he'll probably have to endure 2 terms as opposition leader before having a realisitic chance of being PM.
Some would argue with Turnbull its unrealistic to see him as PM but lets face it everyone thought when Mr Rudd took over that it was unrealistic he'd ever be a PM.

Costello is it for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that change occur before the next federal election. Abbot has blotted his copy book too, so I think his shot at it has passed by.

Well bang goes that idea. Costello has just announced he won't be seeking the leadership of the Liberal Party. You'd think now that Turnbill is a shoe in. Abbott would be political suicide you'd think.

I thought either Downer or Joe Hockey would be okay as Liberal leader.

With all State Govts and now Federal Govt with Labor its arguable this is the worst position they have ever been in

Crikey that was a shock, but maybe a wise move in the bigger scheme of things, I think everyone involved would realise that Costello is less popular than Howard (let alone Rudd) with the punters.

Costello would be political suicide, Abbott would simply be your ring hole after a smiting hot indian curry!

Costello leaving is not a good thing, if we want a good Rudd government (everyone does I suppose), then we need a good opposition, Peter Costello, is a brilliant parliamentary performer, utterly wasted on the back-bench. I believe that if Costello had been given the leadership 18 months ago we may not have an ALP government now. I think the the electorate might well have warmed to him to some extent, in any case, its all academic now. The Liberals are paying the price for implementing radical ideology, I'm sure Mr Rudd knows this, hopefully he can keep the ideologues in his party in line! We'll just have to wait and see, Rudd's going to get a pretty easy ride with Costello on the back bench, this is not good for the nation

Mike Rann is the perfect example of what you get if you have a weak and divided Opposition. Hopefully the Libs hold it together enough to hold Rudd and his Government to account.

Thankfully for lovers of comedy everywhere Downer hasn't ruled himself out of running for the gig.

AFL footy clubs... in fact ALL footy clubs should remain politically non-partisan!

I can remember Don Banfield telling me he should be No. 1 ticket holder at Norwood not Don Dunstan because he was a Norwood supporter long before his leader!
