Asbestos campaigner Banton dies
Prominent asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton has died at the age of 61, from asbestos-related diseases.
Mr Banton had been suffering from the lung condition asbestosis and asbestos-related pleural disease (ARPD), and was diagnosed with the virulent stomach cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma, in August this year.
All three conditions are caused by previous exposure to asbestos.
Mr Banton had worked with asbestos products during the 1970s when he was an employee at a James Hardie plant.
He later became the face of the campaign to achieve compensation from James Hardie for the many sufferers of asbestos-related conditions.
Mr Banton achieved a measure of compensation last week, reaching a second settlement with former building company James Hardie over his mesothelioma condition.
A friend, Phil Davey, has released a statement on behalf of Mr Banton's family.
"Bernis Banton died peacefully in his sleep this morning at about 1:00 am. He was at home and surrounded by his family," he said.
"Bernie's family have asked me to thank the community on their behalf for their support for Bernie, and to request privacy at this difficult time."
